‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’ team accused of mistreating extras: Starvation, forced to shave hair, and more

IU and Park Bo-gum starrer ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines‘ is once again making headlines, but this time for shocking reasons. Many background actors and staff members have claimed that they were mistreated on the set of the Netflix show.

One prop renting company, which had supplied vintage buses and large set pieces for the show, has revealed that their vehicles were mishandled by the production crew. Not only was the team caught using lacquer to stencil the rented bus, but they also had a bad attitude when questioned about it.

Recalling the incident, one staff member said, “The production team had zero skills to operate the retro buses or large props that we rented or made for them, and they damaged them all. They were either ignorant or irresponsible,” as quoted by Koreaboo.

“They were caught trying to use lacquer from ironwork stores to stencil the bus. The ignorant brat who thought that lacquer thinner is a magic potion that can cleanly erase just only the lacquer spray went around the set acting a fool,” the staff added.

If that’s not enough, one extra alleged that background actors were forced to shave their heads. They were also denied the ability to wear inner thermal layers because it would ruin the fit of their costumes. They stated, “Who would even notice extras in the background? They really treated us like slaves.”

The unknown person also accused the production team of ignoring elderly extras in the cold winter. “The team made people starve without providing a food truck or craft table, throwing us to a random restaurant and telling us to eat within 30 minutes,” they added.

In response, Netflix has said that they are currently looking into the matter and will release an official statement after verifying the facts.

About ‘When Life Gives You Tangerines’: Set against the backdrop of Jeju Island, the story follows Oh Ae-sun and Yang Gwan-sik as they navigate life’s challenges. IU and Bo-gum played the younger versions of Ae-sun and Gwan-sik, whereas Moon So-ri and Park Hae-joon played the older versions.
