You’ve probably heard horror stories of 3-foot tapeworms camping out in someone’s gut. The majority of parasites are so tiny that they can only seen under a microscope. Millions, if not billions! Many people in the world are parasitized. Many don’t even know it.
Intestinal Parasites
There’s a very good chance you have yeast overgrowth or intestinal worms. Over 60 million Americans, according to the CDC are chronically affected by toxoplasmosis. At least 14 percent of us have had toxocariasis. And that’s just in a developed country.
A country with poor sanitation or poor hygiene because of economic factors is more susceptible to problems. World Health Organization reports that more than 700,000 deaths worldwide are caused by parasites and vector borne pathogens each year. Estimates of the prevalence of parasitic disease are likely to be much higher.
Our bodies literally swarm with hundreds of different strains of bacteria and yeasts. More than three pounds worth of bacteria can be found in the digestive tract. For good digestion and absorption of nutrients in the intestine, we need the right balance. Probiotics have a positive impact on our health.
Unbalanced
When the balance between good and bad bacteria becomes out of whack, problems start. Many factors can increase the risk of infection, including certain medications, diet, stress, and contact with infected source. Our bodies are home to naturally occurring yeasts. Overgrowth of yeast can have serious health consequences (not in a positive way). While vaginal yeast infections may sound familiar, they’re usually a sign of a much larger infection.
In my opinion, parasites are the most dangerous invaders in our bodies. Most people are also infected with these parasites. According to studies, most people are infected with at least one parasite, particularly those who have chronic diseases or cancer.
Parasites are found in all sizes, from small ones that you can only see under a magnifying glass to large tapeworms. A tapeworm may live up to 30 years, and parasites can persist for many years.
There are many types of parasites
We don’t really want to think about the creepy crawlies in our gastrointestinal tract. But it’s important to know what we’re dealing with here. Due to the prevalence of intestinal parasites, they come in many forms. Common intestinal parasites include:
- Whipworms – Nearly 800 million worldwide have whipworms. They are a type helminth that live in the large intestinal tract. It’s transmitted by fecal contaminated soil and contaminated food grown in that soil. Lighter infections don’t even have symptoms.
- Tapeworm Infection – Tapeworms can cause intestinal parasitic infections but they can also travel to other parts of the body. Young tapeworms are cysts that can be found in many organs including the heart, brain, spine and liver.
- Roundworms – The larvae can infect various body tissues. Ascariasis also refers to a roundworm. Mature worms prefer to live in the gastrointestinal system, blood and lymphatic systems.
- Pinworms – These are the most common intestinal worm infection in the US. While their hosts are asleep, the females lay thousands upon thousands of eggs. It can lead to intense itching and sleeplessness. Most commonly, the microscopic eggs spread to young children. It’s important to regularly wash all sheets, pajamas, and underwear. You’ll also want to treat the whole family if one of you has it.
- Hookworm Disease – Along with Ascaris, hookworms are a helminth parasite. They attach themselves to the intestinal walls and live in the small intestine. This causes blood loss. Many infected people don’t have symptoms.
- Entamoeba histolytica – The CDC estimates only 10-20% of people with E. Histolytica show symptoms. It’s more common in tropical regions or you can pick it up by visiting one. Also at risk are those who live in unsanitary conditions and men in homosexual relationships.
- Protozoan – Protozoa infections, like giardia and giardia lamblia, are microscopic. They infect blood, and can be passed from one person on to another by mosquitoes or bugs. The human intestinal tract can be infected and transmitted by feces.
- Cryptosporidium – Aka crypto, this parasite is one of the most common waterborne diseases in the US. You can contract it by ingestion of contaminated water or foods, including when swimming. It can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain and weight loss. It is not necessary for everyone to show symptoms. However, they can still spread the disease up to two months after the infection. The most serious symptoms are likely to occur in those with a weak immune system.
What Are the Parasites that We Catch?
Depending on the type, parasites can enter your body through a number of different routes. It can be contracted through bug bites, contact with contaminated dirt, eating undercooked or raw meats or by consuming contaminated food. If you’re traveling to a developing country or drink contaminated water you’re also at risk. Because some parasites are microscopic and live on surfaces for several weeks, they’re easy to spread.
Treatment of parasites requires three steps. We must first kill the parasites and then remove them (and any toxins created by them) from the body. The body needs to be supported in its healing and regeneration.
How to tell if you have parasites
Parasites can cause many symptoms, either directly or indirectly. If you have several of these symptoms, there’s a good chance you have an infestation. Remember that some parasites don’t even cause symptoms though!
Symptoms of parasites
- Reduced immunity and persistent illness
- Itching in the rectum, particularly at night
- Digestion problems such as bloating or cramps, diarrhea, constipation or nausea
- Bloating and Gas
- Tired All the Time
- Eye floaters or spots
- Problems with teeth grinding and sleeplessness
- Anemia
- Asthma
- Flu-like symptoms
- Joint and Muscle Pain
- Eczema or psoriasis
- Extreme hunger

- Plus many more…
Left untreated, Candida overgrowth, yeast growth, and parasites have been associated with many chronic conditions. People with these conditions are more likely to have yeast and parasites.
- Infertility and permanent fertility damage
- Cancer
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Autoimmune diseases
- Arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Malnutrition
- Vitamin Deficiencies
- Chronic Fatigue
- Leaky Gut Syndrome
- Kidney Stones
- Chron’s Disease
- Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and more
- Insomnia, sleep disorders and insomnia
- Digestive disorders of all types
Treatments for Parasites Conventional
Most often, your doctor will order a stool test. Stool samples that don’t contain live, visible parasites are considered negative. However, PCR tests can detect dormant or dead parasites. Anti-parasitic medicines can be prescribed to those who test positive.
Natural Remedies to Treat Intestinal Parasites
It is good to know that there are natural treatments which can be used to kill parasites and rid the body of them. You might want to consider the following treatments if your body is exhibiting symptoms.
Change Your Eating Habits
Eating healthy is our best defense, as parasites thrive on a weak immune system. Sugar is a depressant to our immune system, and it can lead to microbe imbalances. I recommend eliminating all processed sugars and reducing even natural sugars. Honey and fruits high in sugar can cause problems when an infection is active.
A little natural stevia can be consumed occasionally, but you should avoid any product that provides sugar to the body and encourages yeast growth or parasites. You can also give your body an extra boost by avoiding dairy. Healthy whole foods are a must.
Sweat it out
The toxic products of parasites are removed by the body as they die. These (like heavy metallics) can be removed by sweat glands. You can work up a good sweat by working out, going to the sauna, and even gardening! Cayenne can also be used to increase the temperature.
Diatomaceous Earth
This substance is a natural occurring substance that has the ability to kill parasites, parasite eggs and their larvae. It’s naturally high in the silica we need for hair, skin, and nail growth. Plus, it contains trace minerals which can help improve digestion and restore body tissue.
I begin with 1 tsp a daily in 8 ounces water, and then work my way up to 1-2 Tablespoons a days. Use only the recommended amount food-grade DE.DE can also trigger a Herxheimer response (see below for more information).
Apple Cider Vinegar
What can’t apple cider vinegar do? It may help lower blood sugar, improves digestion, and kills harmful pathogens. It detoxifies the body for healthier skin and clearer skin. While it won’t kill parasites on its own, it strengthens the body’s defenses against pathogens.
ACV can be strong so it is best taken with water. Start with 1 tablespoon up to three times a week, 30 minutes prior to a meal. You can add up to one Tablespoon each time.
Probiotics
Probiotics can help restore beneficial gut bacteria which are destroyed by parasites, antibiotics and hormonal birth control. For a healthy gut, we need these good bacteria. I include a lot of Fermented foodsIn my diet I also enjoy This probiotic supplement is a great way to boost your immune system. Just don’t take them within an hour of ACV or diatomaceous earth though!
Herbs and Spices
Garlic is an excellent weapon against parasites and pathogens. Garlic cloves can be added to your diet in the form of minced raw.
CinnamonAnother natural remedy to treat parasites is cinnamon powder. You can use ½ teaspoon of high-quality cinnamon powder in water, kefir, or coconut milk yogurt up to three times a day.
Clove, eucalyptus fennel and white camphor are all anti-parasitic oils. They can be diffused or diluted to use topically. Consult an aromatherapist before using essential oils internally.
Some herbs commonly used against parasites are andrographis and clove with wormwood and black walnut hull. You can also use digestion and immune boosting herbs to strengthen your body’s natural defenses. Make sure you do some research before starting any new herbal regime!
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that boosts the immune system. It’s also helpful for parasite infections. You can take 5 grams of Vitamin C every day in two or three doses if you are experiencing parasite symptoms. You can reduce the dosage if you feel that it is too much.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is mildly antifungal and very nourishing for the body. If you’re not already using it in your cooking, it also tastes great blended into coffee or tea. You can add several tablespoons a day for healthy fats and to support healthy bowel movements as you’re eliminating toxins. Personally, I don’t use coconut oil as much anymore and mainly use olive oil.
Herxheimer’s Reaction
Sometimes, getting rid of parasites is uncomfortable. Herxheimer’s reaction, named after the German doctor who discovered it, is basically a die-off reaction. Herx reactions are caused when parasites or infections are treated quickly with powerful remedies.
It’s best to be on an anti-yeast/parasite diet for several weeks before even starting supplements, This can help minimize reactions. Start with small doses. You can gradually increase the dose to keep die-off symptoms away.
You may even find that you “catch a cold” a week or so after starting to treat your yeast and parasite symptoms. It is actually a mild Herxheimer response. It should pass quickly if you reduce your supplements and drink more water.

Your body has a tough job to do when it comes to removing parasites. It’s important to support your body during the process. All of these things help: regular exercise, a nutritious diet, sufficient sleep, and limiting toxins.
Epsom baths also work well to cleanse the skin. I use 1/2 cup Epsom Salts in hot water for a bath or you can try these detox bath recipes.
Make sure you drink lots of water to flush the toxins out faster. Plenty of sleep is essential to give the body time for regeneration and healing. I aim to get at least 9 hours of sleep a night. It’s also very important to skip the sugar and refined carbs as these make the process much slower. Raw vegetables, healthy fibers and other sources of energy will help you maintain your energy and cleanse the body more quickly.
