Wicked took audiences somewhere over the rainbow with plenty of nods to its source material, The Wizard of Oz — but did you catch one of the film’s biggest and most clever easter eggs?
It’s in perhaps an unlikely place — Nessarose’s silver slippers (silver to match the original L. Frank Baum book and the Broadway production of Wicked, not ruby like the MGM film).
Those who know Wicked or even The Wizard of Oz likely know Nessarose’s ultimate fate, which will come in Wicked: For Good (in theaters Nov. 21). As the sister of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who we know will become the Wicked Witch of the West, it stands to reason that Nessa (Marissa Bode) will become the Wicked Witch of the East — you know, the one Dorothy drops a house on and then steals her shoes.
Bode tells Entertainment Weekly that the wardrobe team included a clever nod to Nessa’s fate in the design of the coveted silver slippers. “I don’t know if anybody fully caught it, but my silver shoes,” she says, “the heel is a spiral to signify the tornado.”
But before we get to that, Wicked: For Good will deal with the fallout from Elphaba’s villainization and the ways it impacts those closest to her.
“You can see all of us taking that in,” Bode says of the conclusion of the first Wicked. “And what that means to us. It’s just processing in that moment. ‘Is this true? Is this really true? This can’t be true because I know my sister.’ I won’t say much about the second film, but there is time in between to process that, and you get to see the reactions from each of us and how we do or don’t resent all of that.”
