Impacts can mix things up but they also reveal deeper layers beneath the surface. This allows us to get to them easily.

Researchers identified a few key quantities we can measure using lunar samples, and how they relate to the Sun’s activity.

We can, for example, look at the time a sample has been exposed cosmic rays and then use that information to calculate the rate of cosmic radiation production from the Sun over the past billion years.

You can also see tracks left by high energy particles as they burrow in the crust for that information.

As the sun’s radiation increases, lunar soil gradually transforms into breccia. Comparing different samples from different locations and depths can help us understand how the Sun’s brightness changes over time.
