A Long Wait for the Right Family
Jax didn’t have an easy start in life. When he arrived at the Regina Humane Society, he was underweight, starving, and clearly had spent a significant amount of time trying to survive on the streets.
“He was very thin, so it seemed like he may have been on his own for a little bit. Also, he was very, very hungry when he arrived,” said Bill Thorn, the shelter’s director.
Once Jax was given food, love, and a full medical check-up, he was ready for adoption—or so they thought. Just days later, he came down with pneumonia, forcing his adoption to be postponed. For weeks, Jax fought through illness, and finally, he recovered. But finding a forever home would turn out to be his biggest challenge yet.
Misunderstood but Full of Love
Jax had what staff called “barrier frustration.” When people walked by his kennel, he’d bark and growl—not because he was aggressive, but because he couldn’t understand why the love he craved was just out of reach.
Sadly, most potential adopters never gave him a chance. They were scared off by his behavior behind the glass.
The staff, however, saw his true heart. They knew how affectionate and gentle he was outside of his kennel. In an effort to give him a better shot, they moved him to the front reception area, where visitors could meet him in a less stressful environment.
There, his personality began to shine. He quickly became a staff favorite, charming everyone with his goofy and loving nature.
A Perfect Match Finally Walks In
After months of waiting, the perfect person came through the shelter doors—a man with experience handling big dogs and the patience to understand Jax’s unique needs.
The connection was immediate. Jax had found his person. And the staff, who had watched him wait for so long, couldn’t have been happier.
The day of his adoption was filled with emotion. But Jax wasn’t about to leave without giving a heartfelt goodbye to the people who had become his family.
The Sweetest Goodbye You’ll Ever See
As the staff gathered to send him off, Jax did something that melted every heart in the room.
He walked around to each person—one by one—and gave them a kiss goodbye. Not a single staff member was missed.
“It was a tearfully happy Friday afternoon when all the staff gathered to send off our boy, Jax,” the shelter shared on Facebook. “After greeting his adopter, he made his way around the room and said goodbye to every person there. It was an incredibly sweet moment to end his long stay at the shelter.”
Today, Jax is thriving. He lives with his loving dad and even returns to the shelter from time to time for visits.
“He is doing great and is very, very happy in his new home. We can tell how much Jax loves his dad, too!” said Thorn.
Jax’s story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes the right home takes time—but the wait is always worth it.
