There’s nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a dog abandoned by the very people he trusted the most. While some dogs are born strays, others once knew the warmth of a home—until they were cruelly discarded like they never mattered.
That was the case for Pumba, a senior dog who had once been a beloved pet. But when his family moved away, they left him behind.
For over a year, Pumba wandered the streets, confused and alone. He never gave up hope that his owners would return, often resting near his old home, waiting for the familiar faces that would never come back.
Thankfully, kind-hearted neighbors began feeding him, but Pumba needed more than just scraps—he needed a second chance at life.
Hope for Paws Steps In
When Hope for Paws received a call about Pumba’s situation, they knew they had to act fast.
Rescuers JoAnn Wiltz and Lisa Arturo rushed to the scene and quickly spotted Pumba resting on a patch of grass by the sidewalk.
To gain his trust, they set up a humane trap with food inside, hoping to lure him into safety.
But Pumba was too smart.
He sniffed out the food but refused to step fully inside the cage. He was hungry, but his survival instincts told him to be cautious. He carefully grabbed the food, keeping his hind legs outside so he could escape if necessary.
The rescuers had to change their approach.
Gaining His Trust—One Step at a Time
Knowing they couldn’t trick Pumba, JoAnn and Lisa decided to win his trust the hard way—by being patient and kind.
They slowly approached, offering food by hand. At first, Pumba was hesitant. He had learned not to trust humans after being abandoned.
But something inside him—perhaps a distant memory of love—told him to take a chance.
Little by little, he inched closer.
After minutes of gentle coaxing, Pumba finally allowed them to slip a leash around his neck. The moment he realized he was safe, he stopped running. He let himself be picked up and carried into the car.
He was no longer just a stray dog on the streets.
He was a rescue.
A New Beginning for Pumba
The rescuers rushed Pumba to a veterinary hospital, where he received the care he desperately needed.
And in a matter of days, he transformed.
The once-cautious, lonely dog became a happy, affectionate pup. He soaked up love from the staff and later, from his new foster family.
At his foster home, Pumba was finally surrounded by love again. He had dog friends to play with, warm beds to sleep in, and humans who truly cared about him.
For the first time in a long time, he wasn’t waiting for someone to come back for him—he had found a new family that would never leave him.
Living Out His Golden Years in Love and Comfort
Pumba is now spending the rest of his life in a loving, safe environment.
The senior dog who was once abandoned and forgotten is now cherished and adored. His tail wags freely, his eyes shine with joy, and his heart is full again.
Though his original family may have left him behind, Pumba has found something even better—a family that will love him forever.
