In a few months, stores should have king-size cigarette with individual labels. Then regular size cigarettes are due to arrive in the beginning of 2025.

Carolyn Bennett (Canada’s former addictions ministry) has said previously that warning labels are “virtually inavoidable” and will, along with graphic images displayed on packages, provide a real, startling reminder about the health effects of smoking.

The Canadian Government noted that certain young people, especially those who are susceptible to addiction, will start smoking after receiving a single pack of cigarettes, not a pack with health warnings.

In 2000, Canada became the first country to order graphic warnings on packs of cigarettes – including grisly pictorials of diseased hearts and lungs – to raise awareness of the health hazards associated with tobacco use.

In the last two decades, smoking has declined.

According to the government, smoking continues to kill nearly 48,000 Canadians every year. Nearly half of all health care costs in Canada are related to substance abuse.

Ottawa aims to further reduce the number of smokers in the country to five percent of the population, or about 2 million people, by 2035 – from about 13 percent currently.
