Rosenthal: Mets depend on Scherzer and deGrom dominance. It is possible that playoffs could be more difficult without it in Atlanta.

It is easy to learn quickly about this sport and not to give too much weight any one series or game, even if there are still games. The. Not unrealistic, right? Nor is it unrealistic to envision deGrom and Scherzer dominating in the postseason, considering who they are and all they’ve accomplished. Except here’s the problem. The Mets were created for deGrom, Scherzer and their greatest series against the most powerful rival. Neither team delivered the excellence that the Mets required, falling short against exactly the opponent their team will face in October.

DeGrom made his season debut with the Mets on Aug. 2, but that was after deGrom had been placed on the injured list by the Mets. They placed Scherzer on the injured list from Sept. 7 to 19 to prevent him from “snapping” — Scherzer’s word — his left oblique again. They pointed all things towards October. Even rearranging their rotation so that deGrom would begin the series opener, with the intention of securing the tiebreaker immediately. Instead, they are left wondering where their season is heading and if it will end sooner than they thought.
