Tottenham went top of Group D with a dramatic 3-2 victory over ten-man Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday – and they were to sweat.
Spurs were bottom of the group after an Eric Dier error allowed Frankfurt to go in front, before Heung-min Son and Harry Kane turned things around by the 28th minute and had Antonio Conte’s men top.
Son had another brilliant moment before half-time, which looked like it would secure the points. Tuta received a red card from Frankfurt, but that was not the case.
Faride Alidou scored a goal with three minutes left and forced Spurs fans who had just left to go back to their seats.
Those who did would’ve been left without fingernails as Bryan Gil won a penalty, Kane missed it despite scoring one earlier, and Frankfurt piled on the pressure in a thrilling climax.
Spurs won the thrilling rollercoaster.
It all started when Dier decided to make a bad decision and drop a clanger.
Daichi Kamada opened the game with a simple opener in the 14th minute after he had used a heavy touch in his box.
Ex-Premier League midfielder Matt Holland said: “What a mess, what a mess from Spurs! Dier is totally unaware.”
Tottenham finished at the bottom of this group for a short time, but Kane is incredibly on his game.
The Three Lions captain set up Son’s equaliser just six minutes later and by the 28th minute, Kane had won and converted a penalty to put his side in front.
Tottenham became the top team in their group suddenly, and Son scored a goal with magic in the 36th minute to give them a two-goal cushion.
Holland said: “Sometimes you just have to stand and admirer a piece of magic.
“Son catches this as cleanly as you like. It’s past the goalkeeper in a flash. That is a finish and a half.”
A bizarre moment saw Tuta brandished two yellow cards before Spurs’ players reminded the referee to show a red in the second-half.
But the match was far from over – and Tottenham will be relieved they did not throw away a crucial three points after Alidou’s late goal and Kane’s stoppage time miss from the spot.
