For most of his 13 years, Julian knew only hardship. The elderly dog had endured years of neglect, his fragile body bearing the weight of sorrow and sickness. After his elderly owner passed away, Julian was left alone on a cold pavement—abandoned with no one to care for him. His fur was a tangled mess of filth, his legs weak, and his eyes clouded with age. If no one stepped in soon, he wouldn’t have survived.
Thankfully, help arrived in the form of Valia Orfanidou and the team at Save a Greek Stray, an animal welfare group dedicated to giving forgotten pets a second chance. The moment they saw Julian, they knew he still had fight left in him.
A Painful Past Revealed
When rescuers found Julian, his appearance was shocking. His coat had become so overgrown and knotted that he could barely move. His body was buried under layers of dirt, insects, and waste. It was clear he had suffered for a very long time.
In addition to his physical neglect, Julian also faced serious health issues: partial hearing loss, cataracts, and a heart condition. Though his challenges were many, his gentle spirit remained.
A Transformation Begins
The first step in Julian’s recovery was removing the massive clumps of hair that had imprisoned his small body. It took the rescue team four hours to carefully shave away years of neglect. As they worked, more and more of the dog beneath the coat began to appear—thin, delicate, and vulnerable but alive.
Valia described the moment in the video below: “It was incredibly fulfilling to finally hug him, pet him, and spoil him.”
Although freed from the physical weight of his matted coat, Julian now had to relearn how to walk properly. His body had become used to carrying the extra load, and it took time for him to adapt to a life of comfort and ease.
Rediscovering Joy
With time, patience, and gentle care, Julian began to thrive. His steps grew steadier. He started exploring the world around him with curiosity. Slowly, his personality emerged—kind, joyful, and loving.
The team at Save a Greek Stray allowed him to recover at his own pace. “What truly matters is helping any rescue animal live their best life according to who they really are—not who we imagine them to be,” said Orfanidou, who documented his journey.
Still Hoping for a Family
Now nearly unrecognizable, Julian sports a soft white coat and a spirit full of life. He enjoys warm blankets, nutritious meals, and the affection of people who see him for who he is. Though he’s come a long way, Julian is still searching for one last miracle—a forever family.
Due to his age and medical needs, adoption hasn’t been easy. But those who know Julian believe the right home is out there, and when it comes, it will be worth the wait.
