While walking along a quiet road in the Philippines, a group of friends noticed an odd plastic container sitting along the edge. The box appeared hastily modified—it had been cut in several places, patched with tape, and reinforced with scraps of chicken wire. Curious and concerned, the group moved closer to investigate. As they peered inside, they saw a pair of eyes staring back at them.
The animal within was in such poor shape that it was hard to tell what she was. Emaciated and almost completely bald, she barely resembled a dog. But one thing was certain—she was in urgent need of help.
The group gently freed the frightened animal and reached out to Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF) for assistance. Once the rescue team arrived, they named her Daisy and prepared for a long road to recovery. Despite her condition, the team was determined to give her every chance.
“When approached, Daisy was quiet [and] appeared terrified and confused,” said Heidi M. Caguioa, program director at AKF, in an interview with The Dodo. “Possibly just feeling indifferent already about what [would] happen to her.”
A Painful Past, A Promising Future
Daisy was immediately taken to a veterinarian, where she was treated for multiple skin infections. She was underweight, frightened, and unsure of the people trying to help her. Her recovery wouldn’t happen overnight, but the team at AKF was patient and persistent.
Each day, they worked on building Daisy’s trust, showing her that kindness still existed. Slowly, her body began to heal—and so did her spirit.
Weeks turned into months, and Daisy’s transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Her fur began to grow back, her eyes brightened, and her energy returned. She no longer resembled the fragile creature found in the box.
“She loves to be cuddled and be with humans,” Caguioa shared. “She is still fearful at first but warms up to people in just a snap.”
A Happy Ending
Recently, Daisy found what she had always deserved—a family of her own. Her adopters had been looking for a dog just like her, and when they met Daisy, they knew she was the one.
Now thriving in her new home, Daisy is surrounded by love and comfort. Her journey from a discarded dog in a plastic box to a cherished family member is a powerful reminder of what rescue and compassion can achieve.
