- Hunter Biden is under investigation by US Attorney David Weiss. Weiss has been designated as a special counsel.
- The investigation into the son is now at a new level.
- Conservatives don’t seem to be celebrating. They attack Weiss and say he’s untrustworthy.
Attorney General Merrick Garrland Hunter Biden will be investigated by a special council, the federal government announced on Friday. The move represents a significant step up in its ongoing investigation of President Joe Biden’s child.
David Weiss has been named as the new US attorney in Delaware, by Garland. Former President Donald Trump appointed him to this position. investigatingHunter Biden will be in this position starting 2019. Weiss’ new role will give him greater power to investigate the son of the president, and he will be required to provide a report at the conclusion of his investigation.
Republicans, however, aren’t celebrating the good news. Weiss is already being criticized by Republicans.
The Twitter account of the House Republicans in the House Judiciary Committee (chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan from Ohio) wrote: “David Weiss cannot be trusted.” “This is a new way of whitewashing the Biden’s family corruption.”
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy questioned Weiss’s trustworthiness and stated that investigations led by the House GOP into the Biden Family will continue.
Republicans argue that Weiss has been a Republican for a long time. Hunter Biden faces criminal chargesThe son of the president will not be pursued sufficiently for his failure to pay taxes between 2017 and 2018, and for illegal possession of a gun.
The DOJ is repeating its claim that Hunter Biden has a “sweetheart deal” because of his family name. Prosecutors rarely charge other defendants in similar cases.
Rep. James Comer from Kentucky, the chair of the House Oversight Committee claimed in a press release that the DOJ is “trying” to “stonewall congressional oversight” of allegations that the Biden Family is corrupt. He was referring to a case the House Republicans are trying to build, but haven’t been able to prove.
Weiss has always rejected the claims of a whistleblower who claimed that the Department had hindered Weiss’ work and refused his request to become a special counsel. Garland stated on Friday that Weiss requested to be appointed special counsel on Tuesday this week.
Nevertheless, the appointment of a Special Counsel could complicate matters for House Republicans.
Members of the House Freedom Caucus – a hard-right group – have proposed “defunding’ certain aspects of the DOJ, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, over allegations that the Department has been weaponized against conservatives. The Department recently charged him with his efforts to sway the 2020 elections.
The DOJ’s escalated investigation into Hunter Biden will force those Republicans to consider whether their plans for restricting DOJ funding could hamper that investigation — or whether they might seek to target certain aspects of the Department’s work while leaving Biden-related investigators alone, creating the impression that their efforts are purely political.
