You can also find out more about My Remineralizing toothpasteThis is one of Wellness Mama’s most popular posts. Over the years I’ve had a lot of emails from people who’ve switched and love it. After I switched, Remineralize my teethSince I was able to reverse my dental caries, I have become a convert!
My homemade toothpaste can leave a residue in the sink. Plus there’s some concern with the coconut oil if you have a septic system (like we do). I wanted to know how to incorporate the health benefits of Healing ClaysOur oral health regimen. There were some texture issues with coconut oil and clays.
What resulted was this remineralizing tooth powder and I couldn’t be happier with the results. It’s even easier to make than homemade toothpaste. You can also use spices and herbs instead of essential oil if you prefer.
How to Choose a Natural Toothpaste
Since the 1990s, natural toothpastes are becoming more popular. Fluoride-free toothpastes, sulfate free toothpastes, and natural ingredients are advertised. There are some excellent toothpastes available. This article compares different natural toothpastes. Or you can find the toothpaste I helped develop here (we have tooth whitening toothpaste plus a kid’s strawberry flavor!).
You’ll still find DIY products in my bathroom though because I love being able to customize my oral care products.
Why use Tooth Powder?
Natural tooth powders are less messy than tubes of toothpaste. It is easier to carry around or travel with. Take camping. I don’t have to worry about toothpaste all over my clothes if it accidentally gets squished in my suitcase. And it has a much longer shelf life since we’re not introducing any liquids.
This homemade tooth powder contains a main ingredient that is cellulose. bentonite clay. I was a huge fan of bentonite for years because it has amazing health benefits. It can also be used to draw out heavy metals or toxins.), but it’s also mineral rich.
You can take bentonite internally to help remove toxins, so it’s safe to use in the mouth. Be sure to buy food-grade bentonite. Use the one linked below for internal use. In recent years there’s been talk about the lead naturally found in bentonite clay. While there is a tiny amount of lead (like many things), it’s bound within the clay and not bioavailable. Read more This is what I’m talking about.
Bentonite also contains calcium, magnesium and silica, which nourish the teeth. What is the process? It is unique in that the molecules of Bentonite develop an electric charge when mixed with water. This charge attracts toxins and absorbs them, drawing them inside the clay structure.
To put it another way…
Bentonite is an expanding clay. When mixed with water, it expands quickly like a porous sponge which traps toxins. It’s also very gentle and has a milder taste. I use it to make facial masks, healing poultices and even for my hair.
Healthy Tooth Powder Ingredients
Other ingredients in the tooth powder also promote a healthy microbiome. The mixture of herbs and minerals helps fight bad breath, and your mouth will feel squeaky-clean. You can add more mint to the mixture and leave out the cinnamon and clove for a pure, minty flavor. You can adjust the powder amount to suit your taste. I personally love the balanced blend. Organic peppermintPowdered cinnamon and a refreshing clove.
- Baking Soda – Helps remove stains and whiten teeth but it’s gentle enough that it won’t harm enamel. It helps remove plaque, reduces bleeding gums and inflammation. Because it’s alkaline it supports a healthy mouth pH to discourage harmful bacteria.
- Calcium carbonate powder – Provides the calcium needed for strong enamel and can help reduce tooth sensitivity.
- Ground cloves – Naturally antioxidant and a broad spectrum antimicrobial. Clove can freshen breath, increase circulation to promote healthier gums, reduce inflammation and relieve the pain from sensitive teeth. The clove gives the powder a delicious taste.
- Cinnamon – Also antimicrobial and antifungal (especially against candida). It tastes great and discourages bacterial growth for fresher breath. Reduces gum swelling and increases circulation.
- Mint – Tastes great and soothes the gums. It is antimicrobial and helps to relieve toothache. There’s also some evidence it can help fight the virus that causes cold sores.
- Xylitol – This sweetener adds to the tooth powder flavor but also has some impressive oral health benefits. According to studies, it can help reduce inflammation caused by gingivitis or plaque. It helps to prevent cavities, and it binds calcium in order to help remineralize the teeth.
Adding Essential Oils
It’s completely optional, but you can add some essential oils to your tooth powder. They’re a potent way to increase the oral health benefits. The majority of antimicrobial essential oil is strong, so a small amount will go a long way. When adding essential oils to the recipe, I only add a couple drops per batch.
You can use essential oils to make your own tooth powder.
This tooth powder allows you to customize the taste. You can either add essential oils for an increased potency, or leave them off to get a milder flavor (that my kids enjoy).

How to use tooth powder
Dip the bristles a toothbrush in the powder. Sometimes I’ll also add a few drops of the OraWellness Brushing blend. Brush with cool water and rinse. This can be used by adults and kids daily. If needed, follow up with mouthwash or flossing.
Shelf Life and Storage
Store this powder properly and it will last many years. Store the tooth powder away from direct heat and light (like your car in summer). While it doesn’t have any water and the ingredients are antimicrobial, be sure to avoid getting the tooth powder jar wet. Put a tiny amount of powder in your hand before applying to a moist toothbrush. Never dip your brush in the powder jar as it introduces bacteria.
Oral Health Program
No one has ever seen my teeth before Whiter or healthierMy oral hygiene regimen is (according my dentist) a big help. I eat healthy foods and use mouth health products. I don’t do the same thing every single day, but here are some of the things I use. I’ve changed it up some since I reversed my cavities and often now I’ll just use Wellnesse toothpaste.
