Tina Holland, who often spends her lunch breaks walking her three dogs near her Texas office, never expected to stumble upon a heartbreaking scene. But one day, as her dogs became fixated on something ahead, she followed their gaze—and what she saw stopped her in her tracks.
A Tiny Pup in Desperate Need
“There, trembling and crawling on her belly, was the tiniest puppy I’ve ever seen,” Holland shared with The Dodo. “She looked utterly terrified and desperate for help.”
As she looked around, Holland quickly realized what had happened. Just a short distance away sat a box next to the dumpster. Inside were a pee pad and a small toy—signs that the little pup had been left behind intentionally.
“It broke my heart to think that someone had left this defenseless little soul there, just 75 feet away from a busy road,” Holland said.
Wrapped in Warmth and Love
Without hesitation, Holland gently picked up the frightened pup and tucked her into the safety of her hooded sweatshirt. The tiny dog peeked her head out, shivering from the cold—or maybe the fear.
Once back at the office, Holland gave the pup water and checked for visible injuries or fleas. Thankfully, the little dog seemed to be in relatively good health. Knowing she needed professional help, Holland contacted Dawgs Fight Back, a local rescue group experienced in giving abandoned dogs a second chance.
Peeka’s Second Chance Begins
Soon after, the pup—now named Peeka—was placed in temporary care. She quickly made new friends and began to show her playful, affectionate personality.
“She’s fantastic!” Peeka has such a silly and sweet personality. She spends her mornings running outside with our big dogs. They chase each other or various bugs that fly by,” Alyson McDonnell, director of Dawgs Fight Back, said in an interview.
McDonnell believes Peeka would do best in a home with children or another energetic dog to match her playful nature. She loves attention and gets along with everyone she meets.
Waiting for Her Forever Family
Peeka’s transformation is a testament to resilience and the power of compassion. Once trembling in fear beside a dumpster, she’s now full of energy and love, and ready to become someone’s loyal companion.
