In Southern California, a heartbreaking scene unfolded when a pregnant dog and her puppy were left behind on the streets with nothing but each other for comfort. Their owner had driven off, leaving the helpless pair to survive with no food, no shelter, and a severe storm approaching.
With nowhere else to go, the dogs huddled together on a sidewalk. Concerned neighbors noticed the abandoned pets and quickly stepped in to help however they could.
A Makeshift Shelter Built with Love
Wanting to protect the dogs from the elements, kind residents used what they had on hand—cardboard boxes, an old chair, and some blankets—to build a temporary shelter. Each dog had their own small box to sleep in, and the neighbors took turns watching over them.
“The kind neighbors made boxes for beds and a chair with blankets and beds. Sweet little babies each had their little boxes. And they each slept in their own,” wrote rescuer Suzette Hall in a Facebook post.
Despite their best efforts, the neighbors knew this setup wouldn’t be enough—especially with a storm drawing near and the mother dog heavily pregnant.
Rescuers Called in Just in Time
Fearing for the dogs’ safety, the neighbors reached out to Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy in Irvine, and her colleague Mary. When the pair arrived, they were heartbroken by what they saw.
“Yesterday these two babies were dumped with nothing but each other. They would go up and down the street looking for the ones they once trusted. The neighbors couldn’t believe it,” Hall shared.
While the puppy was easily picked up, the mother dog was too scared to approach. Suzette gently set a humane trap filled with food nearby. It didn’t take long before the mother walked in and was secured safely.
“I reunited them together in the trap and we drove away from their little box beds,” Hall said.
A Second Chance at Life
Both dogs were taken to a veterinary clinic, where they received checkups and care. Thankfully, they were in good health. Once cleared, they will begin the next chapter of their lives in foster care or permanent homes.
Thanks to a caring community, Suzette and her team, the pregnant dog and her pup were saved just in time. Now, they are safe, warm, and on the path to a better life.
With love, support, and a bit of luck, these two will soon find a family that treasures them as they deserve. To see Suzette’s video, click play below.
