In a part of Louisiana where stray animals are too often left behind, a pair of Pit Bulls—later named Norman and Francis—were dumped in a canal with no way to escape. Cold, confused, and frightened, the dogs huddled together, waiting for help that felt like it might never come.
The steep walls of the canal made climbing out impossible. As rain clouds gathered and the threat of rising water loomed, their time was quickly running out.
A Race Against Time
Luckily, a passerby noticed the stranded dogs and quickly contacted Zeus’ Rescues, an animal welfare group based in New Orleans. As soon as they got the call, the team dropped everything and rushed to the location, knowing they had to act fast.
Upon arrival, the rescuers found the two dogs clearly in distress. Their eyes were wide with fear, and their bodies trembled from cold and panic. The team approached slowly, using calm, reassuring voices in an attempt to earn their trust.
At first, both dogs barked anxiously, unsure if the people climbing down into the canal were there to hurt or help. But as the team inched closer, something changed. The frightened barks softened, tails began to wag, and hope returned to their eyes.
One Brave Step at a Time
To encourage the dogs to come forward, the rescuers offered canned food. Francis, the more outgoing of the two, took the first steps toward safety. She accepted food from the rescuer’s hand, and once she felt secure, she crossed the canal. The team gently lifted her to safety.
Realizing he was now alone, Norman gathered his courage and made a leap across the water’s deepest section. The rescuers were ready and quickly scooped him up.
With both dogs finally safe, the team loaded them into their van and brought them to the rescue facility in New Orleans.
Healing Begins With Kindness
At the shelter, Francis and Norman received the care they desperately needed. The team gave them warm blankets, plenty of food, and lots of affection. It didn’t take long for the dogs to show just how sweet and loving they truly were.
“They love to be in the sunshine and will just lay out like a cat in the sun… They’re perfect angels,” said Michelle, one of the rescue volunteers, in the video below.
New Beginnings
The two pups are thriving at the rescue center and cannot wait to find their forever home. Both dogs are attending adoption events, showing off their charm and cuteness. The staff has no doubt they will find a family soon. Here’s to a bright future for Francis and Norman. Thank you to the wonderful people who saved their lives.
