In Hamilton County, Ohio, a man has been indicted for animal cruelty after allegedly killing his elderly dog instead of paying for humane euthanasia.
According to Hamilton County Prosecutor Connie Pillich, 59-year-old Richard Orth of East Price Hill brought his aging dog, Tinkerbell, to the Animal Hospital of Delhi Hills on May 23. After examining the dog, a veterinarian advised that euthanasia was necessary due to the dog’s deteriorating condition. Orth was told the procedure would cost $500.
While hospital staff stepped out to prepare for the euthanasia, Orth took matters into his own hands. According to prosecutors, he strangled Tinkerbell while alone in the exam room. The dog sustained serious trauma to the neck and throat.
Audio reportedly captured Orth speaking during the act. He was heard saying, “Go be with God. I won’t let you suffer. $500 is highway robbery.” Veterinary staff returned to find the dog injured. Despite their efforts, Tinkerbell had to be euthanized due to the severity of her condition.
“This was a horrific act,” said Pillich in a public statement. “There’s no excuse for what happened here. Our office is committed to holding those accountable who harm animals.”
Orth has been formally charged with one felony count of animal cruelty. If convicted, he could face up to 12 months in prison. Jail records show that Orth is being held on a $500 bond for violating laws related to companion animals. Understandably, the case has sparked outrage among animal advocates and the local community.
Ironically, Orth’s home has a banner out front that reads “Spoiled Dogs Live Here.” He also posted about the loss of his dog on social media.
This cruel act is why animal cruelty laws are in place. While the punishment may not be harsh enough, we are grateful animals like Tinkerbell are protected from cowards like Orth.
