Kevin Bacon tried to join ‘Spinal Tap’ sequel but ‘didn’t get the part’

  • Kevin Bacon appeared on The View for an interview, where he revealed This Is Spinal Tap is his favorite film.
  • Bacon said he tried to contact director Rob Reiner about appearing in the upcoming sequel.
  • “I didn’t get the part,” Bacon admitted.

Kevin Bacon would very much like to be a victim of spontaneous human combustion — at least in the world of This Is Spinal Tap and the classic comedy film’s upcoming sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues.

The actor appeared Friday morning on The View to promote his new movie The Bondsman, but he also dug deep into his own personal history with other films — including labeling director Rob Reiner‘s 1984 rock band mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap — which was also co-written by Christopher Guest — as his favorite movie of all time.

“I worked with Rob Reiner on A Few Good Men, yeah, he’s great,” Bacon told The View cohosts, before telling a story about how he attempted to get cast in the Spinal Tap sequel that releases later this year.

“So, I wanted to play one of the exploding drummers in the new Spinal Tap, basically, but I didn’t have Rob’s number,” Bacon said, referencing a gag from the original film surrounding the comical disappearances of drummers.

He continued: “Somebody called him for me, and I didn’t get the part. Spinal Tap, I’m so excited about part two, and the original it was a running joke that they just had drummers that would disappear.”

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for Reiner for comment.

Panelist Ana Navarro then encouraged Bacon to set his sights on a third film.

“Yeah, part three!” Bacon replied, while cohost Sunny Hostin urged, “Put Kevin in it! Please!”

In an interview with PEOPLE, co-writer and star Michael McKean teased the project’s characters as “tragic in the funniest way” in the new film.

Reiner revealed last year that the new movie will include A-list musicians playing themselves. “Paul McCartney is joining us, and Elton John, and a few other surprises. Garth Brooks,” he said at the time.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
