Many people ask me how I make my children do something.Take vitamins. While mine will just take their fish oil, probiotics, and magnesium without a problem … it got me thinking.
One of their favorite natural treats (homemade gummy Bears) was combined with vitamins. These multivitamins gummies are healthy, gut-boosting and kid-friendly.
Why Vitamins are Important
In decades past, all we had to do to get the nutrition we needed was eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables with little added sugar or processed food. The situation is a little bit more complicated now. Unless you’re growing everything you eat in really nutrient-dense soil (or buying from someone who does), food just doesn’t have the essential nutrients it used to.
Fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Fewer than 50%The essential vitamins and minerals that they used to. Certain nutrients are not available in American foods. These nutrients are essential for our health, as they protect us against heart disease and help to boost the immune system.
As a mom, I’m more targeted in my approach to nutrition with my kids. Vitamin D comes from the sun, and vitamin A is found in fish oil. They also enjoy taking non-GMO and gluten-free vitamins (without sugar!). Like this one. It’s a great way to add more nutrition to their day by adding homemade gummy vitamin supplements!
Gut Soothing Gellatin
Gelatin is used to give these products their texture. Gelatin is not just a good collagen source, it also promotes healthier hair, nails, and skin. Gelatin can also be a great addition to your gut health. As Hippocrates reportedly claimed many years ago “All disease begins in the gut.” Science is continuing to confirm how important our gut health is for overall health!
Immune support and improved mental health are among the health benefits of a healthy gut.
One caution: If your kids aren’t regularly Bone broth(They should!) Then start slowly by giving them just a few. They may need some time to adjust. Gelatin is soothing to the digestive tract.
Customize Your Gummy Vitamins
Depending on what you prefer, you can choose to add different vitamins or nutrients. Keep in mind that these won’t have a full spectrum of nutrients like premade dietary supplements or prenatal vitamins though. Certain oil-based vitamins, like vitamin E and fish oil also won’t mix in very well.
You can make your own chewable supplements without the additives, corn syrup sweeteners, or sugar alcohols found in most gummy supplements.
I can think of endless uses for these, but these are the ones I’ve tried so far. You can change the fruit juice to make different flavors.
- Add vitamin C Powder and using lemon juice to make sour vitamin C gummies for immune health.
- Add Probiotics with a fresh juice base to make GAPS friendly gummy vitamins
- Use homemade elderberry syrupUse as a base when making flu-busting chewable vitamin
- Add Natural CalmMagnesium chewable vitamins
- Making regular flavors and adding them to Cute MoldsHow to make gummy snack. They’re nut-free and sometimes approved for school activities.
You can also add some calcium powder to your diet (alongside magnesium and vitamin D). B-complex vitamins with biotin and folate are also good options.
Probiotics are used by meJust Thrive because they’re proven to make it to the gut (unlike many others). In general, if your probiotics need refrigerated and can’t stand any heat, they won’t make it past your stomach acid. They even have a kid’s probiotic gummy that my kids love!
Choose Your Juice
Sugar is added to most juices in stores. They’re often flavored sugar water concoctions. Fresh pressed is the best option, but if you need a store-bought option look for something that’s just organic juice. No sugars, flavors or colors added.
Pineapple juice doesn’t work in these because it has bromelain, a digestive enzyme that breaks down protein. Great for digestion, but not so great when you’re trying to make gelatin gel. I’ve found it gives them a weird slimy texture and doesn’t work. Papaya also has this problem.
Mango/orange, elderberry syrup or lemon/lime (sour) are our favorite combinations. They’re full of antioxidants and vitamin C, and taste delicious!
If you’re short on time or can’t make chewable vitamins, HiyaMy next choice would be. There are many options for kids and clean ingredients.

How to Calculate Dose
Since these are more like food, I’m not too concerned with the exact dosage. If you want to know how much your kids are getting, here’s an easy way to figure it out. Divide the mg or the mcg by the serving size.
Divide 400 by 20, if you have 20 vitamin gummies. This amounts to 20% DV Vitamin C per gummy. Even easier is to use a square glass dish, and cut them into squares. This calculation can be done for each added vitamin.
