A Mystery Unfolds in Santa Fe

Authorities in Santa Fe, New Mexico, are investigating the suspicious deaths of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and one of their dogs.

According to a search warrant obtained by TMZ, detectives were puzzled by the circumstances surrounding their deaths, leading them to conduct a thorough search and investigation.

The disturbing scene was discovered when two maintenance workers arrived at the residence and noticed the front door was ajar. Concerned, they entered the home—only to find a shocking and tragic sight.

A Disturbing Discovery

Inside the home, officers found:

🟠 Gene Hackman – Found fully clothed in a separate room near the kitchen, with his sunglasses next to him, leading authorities to suspect he collapsed suddenly.

🟠 Betsy Arakawa – Found lying on her right side on the bathroom floor. A black space heater was positioned near her head, leading deputies to believe it may have fallen if she collapsed abruptly.

🟠 Prescription Pills Scattered – An orange pill bottle was open, with pills scattered across the bathroom countertop, raising further questions.

🟠 A Deceased Dog – A German Shepherd was found dead in a closet near Betsy, while two other dogs—one inside and one outside—were found alive and healthy.

Authorities were immediately struck by the bizarre details of the scene.

No Signs of Forced Entry or Gas Leaks

Despite the eerie circumstances, detectives noted no clear signs of forced entry into the home.

Additionally, both firefighters and the New Mexico Gas Company were called to check for carbon monoxide leaks or any other possible gas-related causes—but their tests found no evidence of a leak or poisoning.

With no obvious cause of death, investigators began piecing together the final days of Gene and Betsy.

Had They Been Dead for Weeks?

The maintenance workers who discovered the bodies told police they had not seen the couple in nearly two weeks.

Further complicating the mystery, Betsy’s body showed signs of decomposition, including bloating in the face and mummification in her hands and feet, suggesting she had been deceased for some time before being found.

TMZ has since obtained the 911 call made by the maintenance workers upon discovering the tragic scene.

The audio recording captures the moment they reported finding the open front door, followed by the grim discovery inside.
