Georgia Libertarian candidate for governor Shane Hazel claims that Peach State “needs another choice”

Georgia Libertarian Shane HazelRunning for governor in the state, he said that he would be an alternative to both the Republican and Democratic options on November’s ballot.

Hazel said that Georgia needs another choice. “We have a Republican and a Democrat, and what we’ve seen over time is more government intrusion into our lives.”

The small government Libertarian was first elected to public office in 2018 as a Republican when he challenged incumbent U.S. Rep. Robb Whiteall in the 7th Congressional District. Woodall won the GOP primary with 72% of the vote.

Hazel ran in 2020 as a Libertarian when he ran against Republican David Perdue (then incumbent) and Democrat Jon Ossoff for U.S. Senate.

Perdue had won the most votes in November 2020, but fell short of 50% due to Hazel’s 115.039 votes (or 2.32%) in that race. Ossoff won the January runoff.

Hazel could force a runoff in November, as Kemp is close to the 50% mark according to recent polling. Fox News polls from September showed Kemp at 50% to Abrams’ 43%.

Kemp won the Governor’s raceIn 2018, the winner received 50.22% of votes and there was no runoff. Ted Metz, Libertarian candidate, was elected with a modest 0.95% of the electorate.

Hazel, whose 2022 campaign is all about personal liberty, supports eliminating income and property taxes. He also supports the elimination of federal and state education requirements and eliminating vaccine mandates.

Strong supporter of the Second Amendment by nature, the Libertarian candidate stated that Georgia’s new permitless carry law is a “step towards the right direction.”

Hazel is challenging incumbent Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and Democrat Stacey Abrams in Georgia's gubernatorial election, which is only a month away.

Hazel stated that the Second Amendment was a codification for your right to protect life, liberty, and property. “Let’s go one step further. Let’s eliminate the ATF as a governor and Libertarian. Let’s get rid of the ATF. Let’s get them out of Georgia so that people can provide self-defense as they want.

Hazel supports legalization of cannabis. He stated, “It is a plant.” It is your right to it by nature.

This was after President Joe Biden on Thursday announced that he would pardon anyone in federal prison for simple marijuana possessory. He also asked governors to forgive those held behind bars for state-level marijuana possession.

“Sometimes it’s the Democrats who get it right. Hazel stated that sometimes the Republicans are right. However, when we choose to support freedom for peaceful citizens, it’s not always going to go wrong.

Multiple proposals have been made to legalize marijuana in Congress, including one by Nancy Mace (Republican from South Carolina). 

Hazel, a father, said he supports life but believes that restrictions on abortion should be determined by local governments.

Hazel stated that the best idea we as Libertarians have is to decentralize it down to the local and county levels where populations may be of different cultures or different backgrounds and decide differently for their area. We respect these people’s cultures, and their decisions about what to do,” Hazel added.

He said, “Personally, I am very pro-life. But I don’t know if we can take money through force or coercion to finance things that are against peoples’ consciences whether they’re prolife or prochoice. We can do such an thing in an efficient manner and live peacefully.”

Hazel will take part in a debate on October 17 with Kemp and Abrams.
