Trailers

The Game Awards 2021| The Game Awards 2021

The trailer that started it all Evil WestThe Game Awards 2021 revealed gameplay that was ready for display. We hear our protagonist, Jesse Rentier, narrating about how it was “upkeep, maintenance, vigilance” that allowed him to survive the gothic monsters plaguing the West. We see the disgusting scourge running through a village. Then, a series of short cuts take us between different combat encounters and traversal.

This trailer doesn’t give much information. However, we do see Jesse as a second character in the final shots. The trailer cuts to the footage of Jesse and this giant vampire bat creature.

The second Evil WestThe trailer was released in June along with the September release date. The trailer opens with the same scene as the first but gives more context. A scene of a vampire doing magic to open a door, along with a map of Washington, D.C., with a knife sticking in it, is shown with more vague narration. The trailer plays out much the same way as the original, but with more gameplay, new enemies types and bizarre environments.

The official site provides the best context and detail about the game. Jesse is a member of a secret society vampire hunters and is the last line between the United States of America and a new dark threat. Aside from that, your main directive is to “rise up to become a Wild West Superhero.” What more motivation do you need, really?

Gameplay

Jesse shooting a flying vampire.

As their other titles with the exception Trek to Yomi Gaming is clearly the main focus Evil West. This is a third-person adventure game that offers melee and ranged combat options. You will have access guns, lightning-powered gadgets, and many other tools to defeat your enemies. Although third-person shooting seems to be fairly standard, close-quarters fighting can be quite interesting.

Melee combos look fast and stylish. They have a lot of impact and heft. Uppercuts can be used to launch enemies, and then followed by pistol shots to juggle them. Or even grab and smash into other enemies. Depending on the weapon or enemy, finishing moves can also be satisfying and different. Jesse has the ability to do a dodge, which temporarily turns him into lightning. He can also perform a block or parry that allows you to attack anything.

We expect to see pistols and rifles, but we also see shotguns and what appears to be a flame thrower.

Although we have not seen or been given any details, we know that you will be able to level up in order to unlock new perks. However, no other information is available. The game will allow you to upgrade your weapons and other tools, though it is not clear how.

The Extended Gameplay Trailer offers us the longest, uncut view at our game. Evil WestIn action, it is impressive.

Jesse and his partner are riding up to a mansion where his father is preparing for a presentation. Jesse makes his way inside, and a massive zeppelin is visible overhead. This is a noncombat area where you can wander around, find collectibles and spend your Bucks for upgrades.

This screen will show you your character, upgrades, perks, Lore, game tab and level. There is also a mystery symbol and your Bucks. There are three tabs under upgrades. The first lets you upgrade your revolver and gauntlet. One is called Do Not Disturb. This grants Jesse five seconds invulnerability after healing. The other tab, Midair Shot, allows you to instantly kill enemies by launching them with an uppercut.

Upgrades can be purchased at any time, not just when near a specific NPC, via the main menu (provided you’ve got the Bucks).

The action begins after a cutscene. Jesse pulls his enemy in close with his gauntlet to show a new move called “snatch”. The action flows smoothly from melee shooting to third-person shooting. Bucks are also found in the environment, and don’t appear to be earned through kills.

The UI is very minimal — no mini-map or anything — with a health bar, secondary bar below that seems to charge with each enemy killed, and two quick-select diamonds.

You can use TNT as a primary environmental hazard.

There were three types of enemy: a standard ground enemy, one that threw tiny exploding bombs of flesh, and one that flew like an insect. If an enemy was near Jesse, large arrow indicators would be visible around him. This gave you the chance to avoid danger. Enemies, when low on health, also enter a stunned state and flash yellow, meaning they’re open to a finisher.

Melee enemies will drop red orbs, which can restore your health and encourage aggressive gameplay.

The trailer ends with a battle against a huge winged vampire. Just like any normal enemy, the health bar is represented by a red outline of an diamond above their heads. Yellow circles are displayed above a weak point to indicate that it is available and can be targeted with your gun. The trailer ends and the fight is cut short.
