Dog owners often wonder what their furry companions get up to when left alone, but few expect to witness a heroic rescue like the one that unfolded in a backyard pool in Boksburg, South Africa.
For Chucky, a 13-year-old toy Pomeranian, what began as a routine day nearly turned into a life-threatening disaster. The tiny dog accidentally slipped into the family’s swimming pool and quickly found himself struggling to stay afloat. Although Chucky managed to paddle and keep his head above water, he was unable to climb out on his own. With no humans around to help, the little dog faced the very real danger of exhaustion and drowning.
Luckily for Chucky, he wasn’t entirely alone. His loyal companion, Jessie, a 7-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier, was nearby and immediately sprang into action when she saw her friend in trouble.
Footage from the family’s security camera captured the tense moments as Jessie, clearly concerned, attempted to figure out how to save her struggling buddy. In the video, you can see Jessie pacing along the pool’s edge, assessing the situation, and carefully thinking through her approach. She tries repeatedly to pull Chucky out of the water, but it’s no easy task. Jessie has to be cautious—one wrong move could endanger them both.
What the brief clip doesn’t reveal is that this incredible rescue took a full 34 minutes. During that time, Jessie showed remarkable determination and patience, never giving up on her efforts to save Chucky. After several failed attempts, Jessie finally found a way to grasp her tiny friend safely by the ear, gently pulling him out of the pool and onto solid ground.
Once out of the water, Chucky was shaken but unharmed, and the two dogs joyfully scampered off together, their bond stronger than ever. Thanks to Jessie’s persistence and quick thinking, a tragedy was averted that day.
When the dogs’ owners, Byron and Melissa Thanarayen, noticed that Chucky’s head was wet, they were puzzled. The couple had no idea what had happened and assumed Chucky had somehow gotten his head wet while playing. However, Melissa had a gut feeling that something wasn’t right and suggested they check the security footage.
“At first, I didn’t believe Melissa’s theory that Chucky had fallen into the pool,” Byron shared with The Times South Africa. “Our dogs never go near the water when they’re unsupervised.”
But as they reviewed the security footage, the reality of the situation hit hard. Watching the rescue unfold was an emotional experience for the couple. “It was heartbreaking to see,” Byron admitted. “Even now, it’s difficult for us to watch the video without thinking about what could have happened if Jessie hadn’t been there.”
Jessie, a rescue dog adopted from the SPCA four years earlier, had a history that didn’t suggest she’d be a hero. Her previous owners claimed she didn’t get along with other dogs and had returned her to the shelter. However, Jessie fit right into Byron and Melissa’s home from day one, forming a special bond with their other pets, including Chucky.
“Jessie is the best dog we’ve ever had,” Byron proudly shared. “She’s incredible, and we’re especially proud of her, considering she’s the youngest.”
While their dogs do know how to swim, the couple has always been cautious, only allowing them in the pool under strict supervision. This near-tragic incident served as a wake-up call, and Byron and Melissa have since decided to install a pool cover for added safety. “We never thought we needed one, but now we see how important it is,” Byron explained.
Pet drownings in backyard pools are, unfortunately, more common than many realize, with thousands of incidents occurring each year, many of which go unreported. Experts recommend securing pools with gates, teaching dogs how to swim, and ensuring they are always supervised around water.
Chucky’s brush with danger had a happy ending thanks to Jessie’s heroic actions, but not all pets are as lucky. This story serves as a powerful reminder of the potential risks pools can pose to our furry family members, and it highlights the incredible bond that exists between dogs.
