David Pastrnak leaves the Bruins training camp, but negotiations will continue

BruinsTraining camp was over without an extension David Pastrnak. It’s not worrying the right wing.

Agent J.P. Barry has been in touch with Don Sweeney, general manager. Pastrnak doesn’t mind if their conversations extend into the regular seasons.

“I know they’re talking every day,” Pastrnak said. “Obviously they’re trying to get something done. It’s good they’re in contact. Confident it will get done.”

Pastrnak must be signed by the Bruins. Leverage-wise, the 26-year old holds the advantage. The Bruins simply cannot afford to let him go. Trades would not return the same value. There are very few teams that have the trade assets and long-term cap space to acquire Pastrnak.

Pastrnak signed an initial day of training camp on Sept. 14, 2017 for a $60 million six-year contract. His entry-level deal had expired. Pastrnak would have been required to withhold his services if the contract dispute continued. Pastrnak also wouldn’t have reported to camp.

It’s not the same this time around. Pastrnak still has one year to complete his contract. Pastrnak isn’t under the same stress level as before, so he can put pen to paper.

“It’s a little different than (five) years ago. You’re talking a year earlier,” said Pastrnak. “Technically, it’s no rush. We have the entire season. Season hasn’t even started. For me, I’ve been focusing on my game this whole summer. I’m healthy. It’s something you shouldn’t take for granted. I am aware of that. I’m happy. That’s why I want to be on top of my game. The other stuff, it’s for people that work to worry — J.P. and guys around me.
