Each Saturday night throughout the college football season, I’ll rank the 10 best teams in the country. Based on new results and player availability, the order of the 10 best teams will change from week to week. The final spot each week will go to a team that may not actually be the 10th best team in the country but still deserves a little shine.
1. Georgia (4-0)
Yes, Kent StateGeorgia’s defense gave up 22 points and the Bulldogs had a chance of making it a one-score match in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs lost the ball three times, and also allowed a fake kick to convert. These are not great developments for a team which has performed almost flawlessly so far this season. The Bulldogs were dominant in the first three weeks. They were utterly destroyed OregonIs this the same team that has been able to regain its status as a worthy Top 25 team? I sure do.
These three performances have generated enough goodwill for us to offset. Unbelievable win, 39-22. Georgia did pile up 529 yards of offense and held Kent State to just 281 total yards — fewer than what it allowed to Oregon and South Carolina — though it obviously didn’t feel as dominant as those numbers suggest. The Bulldogs’ defense had to replace a ton of starters, and they’re running a dynamic offense capable of masking the defense’s growing pains.
