CF Montreal beat Orlando City 2-0 to advance to Eastern Conference semifinal

The connection on CF Montreal’s game-winning goal in the opening round of the MLS playoffs on Sunday night was a microcosm of the ingredients that helped put together Montreal’s surprising season.

Joel Waterman, an underrated centre back, grabbed the ball and sent a pass to Kei Kamara 38 years old. Kamara was out of contract and had signed a free agency deal in February. Kamara’s outside of the foot touch fell into the path of Djordje Mihailovic, for whom Montreal had spent $1 million in general allocation money in a deal some questioned, but one that has paid off for Montreal — and then some. Mihailovic then played through Ismaël Koné, the young Canadian international who may yet be the next top young transfer out of MLS, and the 20-year-old calmly slotted home the game-winner.

None of these players arrived in Montreal as superstars. They have all played far above what they are worth in MLS. Montreal is one of the most enjoyable teams to watch in MLS because of its chemistry.

This same chemistry led to Montreal’s 2-0 victory over Orlando City in the MLS playoffs. With the win, Montreal advances to the Eastern Conference semifinal to face the winner of Monday night’s NYCFC-Inter Miami game.

Koné’s goal was the difference in a game that saw both teams threatening, yet struggling to find that final piece in the attack. Mihailovic’s late penalty kick secured the victory after eight minutes of extra time.

Orlando City had twice the chance to lead in the first period. In the 25th minutes, Ercan Kara, forward, moved in behind Montreal’s line. However, Ercan Kara decided to not play a pass into the open, streaking Ruan, and instead shot on goal.
