Gennady Gorlovkin was defeated by Canelo Alvarez, who won their trio fight unanimously in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
In the eyes of most observers and fans, the Mexican star won either 10 or 11 rounds. However, the judges saw it differently and scored it much closer.
Both men began their fight by meeting in the middle, with neither side wanting to move backwards.
They were however cautious about one another, Canelo’sIn the opener, output seemed slightly better.
The Mexican’s jab was key early on, and he used it to set up a few notable power shots in round two.
Golovkin started slow, as he was caught with several hard left hooks.
Round four saw this trend continue as the younger man beat his 40 year-old opponent.

GGG took a lot of punishment during the first half of their bout, but did not seem to have won any rounds by the halfway point.
As Golovkin was repeatedly hammered with his powerful right hands, the pro-Canelo crowd cheered.
Kazakhstan’s warrior looked a shadow of his former self, offering very little to deter the Mexican’s assault.
Rounds seven and eight saw Canelo slow down, before Canelo began to coast and won points easily.
Golovkin took a step forward in the eighth and increased his output for a brief moment. His response was immediate and he was hit with yet another hard wrong, which made him take a second step back.
In round nine GGGFinally, he had some positive moments in the fight when he put together a combination hooks that forced his opponent to cover against the ropes.
The Kazakh continued this aggression into the tenth, but Canelo of course didn’t take this lying down and battled back despite showing signs of slowing down.
The Mexican was still ahead enough that Golovkin needed a knockout going into the final round.
GGG set out to find exactly what he was looking for, but Canelo remained determined and won his victory.
He was unanimously voted out by the judges to end the trilogy with scores 116-112, 115-2113, 115-113 and 115-113.
Ironically, after all of the controversy about judges being in his favor for their past two cases FightsCanelo was one round away to being badly robbed at the hands of two scoring officials at their third meeting.
“He’s strong, he’s a great fighter,” the Mexican said. “For me, I’m just glad to share the ring with him.
“We give the fans three really good fights. I’m glad to be involved in that kind of fight.
“It’s very important for me, for my legacy, for my country, for everybody.
“I’ve gone through some very difficult things in my life. I’ve actually shown that defeats are great because they enable you to come back and show humility.
“I’m going to keep going to keep my legacy going.”
