BioNTech was co-founded by a husband and wife team. They partnered with Pfizer in developing a powerful messenger-RNA (mRNA). COVID-19, predicted that a CancerWithin the next decade vaccines may be widely available.
Professor Ozlem Tureci said, “Yes, it is possible to cure cancer or change the lives of patients with cancer.” BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg
Professor Ugur Sahin said that the cancer vaccine would be based on the scientific breakthroughs made during the COVID-19 development shot. It could be available in just eight years.
Kuensberg told him that “we believe this will occur, definitely before 2030.”
The hope is that the vaccine currently under development will train the body in recognizing and attacking cancers using mRNA technology.
Sahin stated, “The goal is to use the individualized vaccination approach to ensure that patients immediately after surgery receive a personalized vaccine and induce an immune response so that the T-cells of the body can screen for remaining tumor cells and ideally eradicate them.”

Kuensberg told Tureci that their experiences as young doctors working in cancer wards, where they couldn’t offer treatment to patients with oncology, motivated them to pursue their research in cancer research.
Tureci stated that this work was the “tailwind” for COVID-19’s shot development. It, in turn, “gives back,” to their cancer research.
Kuenssberg wanted to know if the couple still believed that the cancer vaccine wouldn’t work.
Tureci responded, “I don’t think it so.” “Everything we have learned about the immune system and about what we achieve with a cancer vaccine shows, in principle, the clear activity – we can induce those killer T-cells, we can direct them.”
Tureci said it is still unclear if doctors would use other medical interventions along with the vaccine. He also stated that there are many things that need to be done to ensure patients are cured.
Tureci stated, “Every patient and step we take in these trials of cancer helps us understand what we are up against and how we can address it.”
