Antonio Conte fights back after criticism: ‘I can teach football to many people’

If Antonio Conte felt assailed by recent criticism of his selections and tactics, then Monday evening’s press conference at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt was the moment he fought back. Conte responded by defending his style and his refusal to pick. The first sign of Conte’s frustration came when he was asked whether the fans would get their wish for Spence to start ahead of Emerson Royal, following the Brazilian right-back’s red card against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.“The fans have to be fans,” Conte said. “The fans are the fans, I understand they can think anything, but I see every day what happens during the training sessions. I do my best to help the team. I trust them if they do. But the decision is mine. If I didn’t decide to pick one player it’s maybe because he’s not ready. We are talking about a young player with a good prospect, but I repeat I try to pick the best team.” Ever since Conte famously described Spence as a “club signing” in the summer it has been clear he did not see him as ready for the first team. He has only made one brief substitute appearance this season and this was a further reminder Conte does not think Spence can step straight into the side without it affecting the level of the team.“Also (Matt) Doherty last season played every game,” Conte continued. “Now I am not seeing him in the right way to start the game.
