‘Gangnam Style’ singer PSY in trouble, faces drug prescription probe

PSY is back in the headlines—but this time, it’s not for a viral dance. On August 27, 2025 (KST), Korean media outlet DongA Ilbo dropped a bombshell: the iconic “Gangnam Style” singer has been booked by the Seodaemun Police Station on suspicion of violating South Korea’s Medical Service Act. The alleged crime? Receiving prescriptions for psychotropic drugs—Xanax and Stilnox—without ever setting foot into a doctor’s office, and reportedly having his manager pick up the meds.

Xanax is typically prescribed for anxiety, while Stilnox is used to treat short-term insomnia—both serious medications that require a doctor’s watchful eye. PSY’s agency, P NATION, wasn’t about to let the headlines spiral unchecked. On August 28, it issued a public apology, admitting to part of the mess while drawing a firm line in the sand.

“It was clearly a mistake and lapse in judgment to have a prescription sleeping pill collected on his behalf,” the agency said. But they also insisted that “there has been no proxy prescription”, clarifying that PSY has a chronic sleep disorder, is under regular medical care, and has always received medication based on proper diagnoses.

The probe remains underway. They’re digging into both PSY’s case and the doctor who wrote the prescriptions—though the physician reportedly claims the treatment happened via remote consultations.
