Morgan Gibbs-White signs new Nottingham Forest contract until 2028

Morgan Gibbs-White has signed a new contract at Nottingham Forest, extending his deal until 2028.

The midfielder’s new contract has been described as a “record deal” by the club.

The Athletic reported on July 10 that the 25-year-old was set to undergo a medical with Tottenham Hotspur.

However, The Athletic later reported that Forest were considering reporting Spurs due to what they felt was an illegal approach to sign Gibbs-White. Forest sources, speaking anonymously as they weren’t authorised to do so publicly, also had concerns over how Tottenham became aware of confidential details within his previous contract, which expired in 2027 and included a £60m release clause.

He has since flown out to Portugal to join the Forest training camp after being allowed extra time at home because of a private family matter and featured in the team’s 0-0 pre-season draw with Ligue 1 side Monaco on July 19.

“I’ve felt at home at Forest from the moment I arrived,” Gibbs-White said after signing his new deal. “The support from the fans, my teammates, and everyone around the club has been unbelievable. I believe in what we’re building here — and with the backing of (Forest owner) Evangelos Marinakis and the enormous ambition he has, I want to be part of making something special. I’m excited for what’s to come.”

As reported by The Athletic, Gibbs-White was high on the recruitment lists of several leading clubs. The England international was strongly considered by Manchester City heading into this summers transfer window before they opted to sign Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders instead.

He was a standout performer for Forest in 2024-25, registering seven goals and 10 assists as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side secured a seventh-place finish in the Premier League.

Gibbs-White has made 118 appearances for the club, scoring 18 goals and providing 28 assists.

He made his senior international debut with England in September under interim manager Lee Carsley and has been capped four times by the team.

How significant is this for Forest?

Analysis from Nottingham Forest correspondent Paul Taylor

The news of Tottenham Hotspur’s bid for Morgan Gibbs-White — coupled with the existence of a £60million release clause — was not what Nottingham Forest fans wanted to hear.

Following almost immediately after the sale of Anthony Elanga to Newcastle for £52million, supporters found themselves coming around to the prospect of losing two of their most creative, influential figures.

The new deal does not guarantee that Gibbs-White will be a Forest player for years to come. But it presumably affords the club more protection, as they look to hold on to one of their biggest assets.

It would change the picture, as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side look to build on their seventh placed finish in the Premier League — and prepare themselves to return to European football for the first time in three decades.

Elanga, with his electric pace and directness, will be a difficult man to replace. But any sale of Gibbs-White — so often the heartbeat of this Forest side under both Steve Cooper and Nuno — would leave a gaping void.

As Forest continue to work to strengthen their squad, getting Gibbs-White tied down to a new deal is among the best pieces of business the club could do all summer.
