When a call came into City of San Antonio Animal Care Services about a dog stuck on active train tracks, no one knew exactly what they were walking into. The person who called wasn’t sure if it was a horrible accident or something intentional. Either way, the dog needed help, and fast.

Animal Care Officer Edwards was the first to respond. When he arrived, he found a yellow Lab lying right on the tracks. It looked like the dog couldn’t move. As Edwards got closer, he realized why. A leash was tied around the dog’s neck and secured to the track with a nail. Every time the dog tried to pull away, the leash tightened.

The poor pup was scared and didn’t know what to make of the stranger walking toward him. But Edwards stayed calm and moved carefully. He spoke to the dog gently, slowly gaining enough trust to get a catch pole around him without causing more panic.

Just as he started working to free the leash from the track, the sound of an approaching train cut through the quiet. There wasn’t much time. Edwards managed to get the leash off and lifted the dog into his arms. They had barely cleared the area before a train came speeding by.

Back at the shelter, the dog was named Lucky, and it couldn’t have been more fitting. He was checked out, given a warm place to rest, and a second chance at life. At first, he was unsure of everyone. But little by little, Lucky began to come out of his shell.

“He seems to feel more open to people now,” the team shared in a Facebook update. They also mentioned he was looking for a family.

Not long after, someone stepped forward. A man named Mr. C. saw Lucky’s story and felt an instant connection. “As soon as I met him, I could tell he was exactly the kind of dog that would fit in with my family. He was so chill and unbothered,” he said.

After just half an hour together, Mr. C. knew. Lucky was the one. The adoption was finalized a few days later, and the pup was given a new name—Duke. These days, Duke is thriving in his new home, surrounded by love and comfort.

No one knows exactly how Duke ended up in such a dangerous spot. But what matters now is that he was saved just in time. He didn’t just survive—he found his family.

Please share Lucky’s story. His miraculous rescue is sure to inspire others. And please remember the importance of animal adoption; there are many dogs, just like Lucky, who deserve the best life possible!

A big thank you to Officer Edwards and the staff at the City of Antonio Animal Care Services
