‘Squid Game‘ is one of the most popular and successful shows. The first season achieved significant success, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series, and season two also broke many records. Fans are now waiting for the third and final season, which will be released on June 27, 2025.
At a recent event ahead of the highly anticipated third season of the show, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk took a look back on the show’s journey. During the acceptance speech of his Creator Tribute Award at the Gotham Television Awards 2025, Dong-hyuk revealed that he had a hard time convincing production companies to accept the script of his now hit Netflix series.
The director started his speech by saying, “It feels like miracles keep coming.” He then thanked the Netflix staff, the cast, and his mother. He also thanked “everyone who rejected the Squid Game script back in 2009.” The reason, you ask? He said, “Without those rejections, today’s Squid Game wouldn’t have been possible.”

Why was ‘Squid Game’ rejected? At the time, ‘Squid Game‘ was reportedly seen as too dark, too violent, and unconventional for Korean TV networks and streaming platforms.
What happened in ‘Squid Game’ season 2: In the final episode of the second season, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and his friend Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) are caught after attempting to lead a rebellion against the game organizers. The Front Man, disguised as Player 001, shoots Jung-bae in front of Gi-hun, leaving him heartbroken and ending the season on a cliffhanger.
What will happen in ‘Squid Game’ season 3: In the upcoming season, there will be more deadly games. Gi-hun and The Front Man will finally come face-to-face.
