For the last four years, Buket Özgünlü has poured her heart into caring for abandoned and injured street dogs through her nonprofit, Paws Holding on to Life Association, in Turkey. On a peaceful patch of countryside, she provides a safe haven for over 560 dogs, many of whom face physical challenges that make survival on the streets impossible.
“They were all rescued,” Özgünlü shared with The Dodo, “The majority of them are paralyzed. Some have been shot, beaten, abandoned. All of them have a past.”
But under her care, those painful pasts have given way to something far more hopeful—a life filled with safety, support, and dignity.
A Deeper Purpose Behind Her Mission
Caring for disabled dogs is especially close to Özgünlü’s heart. Her father lives with a disability, and that experience has shaped how she prioritizes the dogs she rescues.
“Since my father is disabled, I give more priority to disabled dogs,” she explained. “They need us more. I try to take care of them as much as possible.”
Within her sanctuary’s open landscape, dogs in wheelchairs roam freely, playing and soaking in the sunshine. It’s a peaceful life, but Özgünlü dreamed of giving them even more—a chance to experience the world beyond their familiar surroundings.
A Wholesome Idea Rolls to Life
Inspired to create more joy for her pups, Özgünlü came up with a creative solution. Using barrels fitted with wheels and linked together like train cars, she built what she calls a “dog train“—a mobile ride designed especially for her furry residents.
“I’d actually been thinking about doing such a project for a long time,” she said. “I was very happy that I did.”
As they glide through nearby villages in their custom-made train, the dogs’ faces radiate pure happiness. Their eyes light up at the new sights and sounds, and they soak in every moment of the adventure.
Spreading Joy Beyond the Sanctuary
It isn’t just the dogs who benefit from these outings. As the dog train moves through town, it captures the hearts of passersby. Smiles and waves greet the pups at every corner, and locals pause to take in the heartwarming sight.
“Many people like it, and it makes me even happier,” Özgünlü said.
For dogs who were once discarded and unseen, these train rides have made them impossible to ignore. Their spirits shine as brightly as their wagging tails, and each ride is a testament to the power of compassion and creativity.
A Labor of Love
Though caring for so many disabled animals is no small feat, Özgünlü finds her greatest reward in their joy. The love she gives may not always be acknowledged with words, but the looks of gratitude in her dogs’ eyes speak volumes.
