A Devastating Loss for Those Who Loved Her

Sometimes, an animal’s story transcends species and language, touching hearts all over the world. Such was the case with Ndakasi, a beloved mountain gorilla whose bond with her human caretakers captured the internet and reminded us of the deep emotional capacity shared between people and animals.

Ndakasi rose to fame after a now-iconic selfie taken alongside her caretaker went viral, delighting millions. But long before that moment, she was simply a scared, orphaned baby—rescued after unimaginable loss and raised by humans who gave her not only survival, but a second chance at life.

This week, the world mourns her passing—but also celebrates the love, loyalty, and trust she shared with her lifelong rescuers.

A Tragedy in the Wild and an Unbreakable Bond

Ndakasi’s life began in heartbreak. In April 2007, rangers at Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo found the tiny two-month-old gorilla clinging to her mother’s lifeless body—her family slaughtered by armed militia.

One of those rangers was Andre Bauma, who did something that changed both of their lives: he held Ndakasi against his chest all night, providing the warmth and comfort she desperately needed. From that moment on, a bond was formed that would never be broken.

Ndakasi grew up in the park’s Senkwenkwe Center, living alongside another orphaned gorilla, Ndeze, and surrounded by loving caretakers. She was safe, supported, and able to live with dignity despite the horror she had endured.

Her story was a beacon of hope—not only for wildlife conservation, but also for the compassion that still exists in the world.

The Viral Selfie That Touched the World

In 2019, Ndakasi’s story reached millions when she and Ndeze posed for a selfie with ranger Mathieu Shamavu, their caretaker and friend.

The gorillas casually stood upright, seemingly smiling as they leaned into the photo—like two friends goofing around for the camera. The internet exploded with disbelief and adoration. People couldn’t believe it was real.

But it was. And it revealed the incredible depth of connection these rescued animals shared with their human protectors.

“Those gorilla gals are always acting cheeky,” the park wrote on Instagram. “This was the perfect shot of their true personalities!”

In that one photo, people saw playfulness, trust, and friendship—reminding us all of the sentience and joy animals are capable of, especially when given love.

A Peaceful Goodbye in the Arms of a Friend

On September 26, after a prolonged illness, Ndakasi passed away at the age of 14.

But she didn’t leave this world alone. She died in the arms of Andre Bauma, the very ranger who had once saved her life as a frightened baby. A deeply moving photo shows her nestled against his chest, her eyes closed peacefully as he cradled her—just as he had done 14 years earlier.

“It was a privilege to support and care for such a loving creature,” Andre shared in a statement. “Her cheerful personality brought a smile to my face every time I interacted with her.”

He added, “I loved her like a child.”

This image, just like the selfie that made her famous, has captured hearts again. It shows a love that transcended boundaries—and a farewell that was as gentle and human as any.

Her Legacy Will Never Be Forgotten

Ndakasi’s story is one of survival, of joy, and of unwavering care. Her viral photo helped bring attention to the endangered mountain gorillas, and her life inspired countless people to care more deeply about conservation.

Virunga National Park wrote: “Her playful nature was a reminder to the world of how much we see ourselves in these animals.”

Through tragedy, she found family. Through trauma, she found healing. And in the end, she found peace in the arms of someone who loved her.

Ndakasi will be missed, but her story—and the powerful connection she shared with Andre and her caretakers—will live on forever.
