A Shocking Betrayal of Trust

When we lose a beloved pet, we trust funeral homes and memorial services to treat them with the dignity they deserve. Our pets are family, and we expect their final journey to be handled with care and respect.

But for more than 6,500 grieving families in Pennsylvania, that trust has been shattered. Patrick Vereb, a 70-year-old funeral home owner in Pittsburgh, now stands accused of deceiving pet owners on a massive scale, creating heartbreak that goes beyond what words can describe.

The accusations have left an entire community reeling—and they serve as a powerful reminder of just how vulnerable we are when we place our trust in the wrong hands.

The Depth of the Deception

According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Vereb, who operated Vereb Funeral Home and Eternity Pet Memorial, promised pet owners private cremations, the respectful return of ashes, and dignified services. Instead, authorities say, he dumped thousands of pets’ bodies in a landfill, returning families the ashes of other animals—or worse, no connection to their loved one at all.

The investigation revealed that between 2021 and 2024, more than $657,000 in fees were collected under false pretenses. Nearly a dozen veterinary practices worked closely with investigators to help piece together the extent of the fraud.

Every pet handed over was meant to receive a private, respectful farewell. Instead, families unknowingly received random ashes while their actual pets were discarded like trash.

It’s a betrayal that cuts deep, leaving anger, confusion, and unimaginable grief in its wake.

The Charges and the Immediate Fallout

Patrick Vereb now faces multiple serious charges, including theft by deception, receiving stolen property, and deceptive business practices.

He surrendered voluntarily and was released on his own recognizance, but the public outrage is only just beginning. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office has launched a dedicated website to gather victim impact statements, providing families with a platform to share their stories and seek updates about the case.

No one answered the door at Vereb Funeral Home when reporters visited, and it remains unclear whether the business is still in operation. However, the emotional damage caused by these actions is something that will not be so easily erased.

Victims are left not only grieving their pets but also grappling with the betrayal of their most personal, sacred trust.

Families Left Reeling and Searching for Closure

For many, the trauma of losing a pet is already overwhelming. Adding deception and violation to that pain is nearly unbearable.

Pets are not “just animals”—they are companions, protectors, emotional support systems, and best friends. They are mourned as deeply as any family member would be. The idea that someone would exploit that grief for profit is devastating.

Victims now face a painful reality: they may never truly know what happened to their beloved pets. The chance to honor them properly, to feel closure, has been stolen. Many are speaking out in hopes of preventing others from suffering the same fate.

Authorities are encouraging anyone who used Eternity Pet Memorial or Vereb Funeral Home to come forward and report their experiences.

Seeking Justice and Moving Forward

Attorney General Michelle Henry summarized the heartbreak best, saying:

“This case is disturbing and will cause devastation and heartache for many Pennsylvanians.”

Justice may come through the legal system, but healing will be a longer journey. The hope is that by holding Vereb accountable, other families will be spared similar heartache—and that awareness will inspire tighter regulations around pet aftercare services in the future.

If you or someone you know entrusted a pet to Eternity Pet Memorial between 2021 and 2024, you are encouraged to visit the Attorney General’s victim information page. Your voice matters—and together, the community can work toward ensuring no family ever endures betrayal like this again.
