When Colleen Harrison and her family welcomed a little kitten named Casper into their home, they weren’t sure how their two dogs would respond to the new addition. Typically, Minnie, their nurturing Pittie, takes on the caregiver role when it comes to small animals. But this time, it was their younger dog, Rex, who formed an instant and unbreakable bond with the kitten.
A Surprising Connection from the Very Start
Unlike Minnie, who’s known for her gentle heart, Rex is full of playful energy. To everyone’s surprise, he connected with Casper immediately. From the moment they met, it was clear they shared the same bouncy spirit. The pair began cuddling and playing nonstop, building a friendship that seemed to blossom overnight.
“At first, Rex didn’t like anyone coming near the kitten,” Harrison told The Dodo. “He was very protective of him. He’s the same way with our children. Anytime the kitten or our kids are out of Rex’s sight or in another room he can’t get to, he just sits close by whining for them.”
In fact, as showcased in the TikTok video below, Rex often hogs the kitten and hides him from plain sight in a deep hug. Harrison has to laugh when the little kitten ‘goes missing’ and she eventually finds him tucked so closely to Rex that he essentially disappears.
A Watchful Eye and a Loyal Heart
Rex became so attached to Casper that he didn’t want to let anyone else near him. In the early days, he would even try to tuck the kitten away from the rest of the household. But, of course, Casper—full of curiosity and energy—was never one to stay hidden for long.
Still, Rex’s devotion never wavered. Over time, he became a little more relaxed about sharing Casper, though he still likes to keep close tabs on his tiny friend.
“Rex doesn’t mind others holding or playing with the kitten now, but he does keep an eye on him at all times,” Harrison explained.
Best Buddies for Life
From the beginning, Rex and Casper seemed destined to be companions. Whether they’re tumbling across the floor in a playful blur or curled up together for a nap, the two are nearly inseparable. For the Harrison family, watching this unique friendship grow has been pure joy.
