Taylor Tomlinson’s ‘After Midnight’ ending after 2 seasons at CBS

After Midnight is coming to an end.

Comedian Taylor Tomlinson’s late-night talk show will not be returning for a third season on CBS, the network confirmed Wednesday. The season 2 finale — now the series finale — will air in June.

Tomlinson said in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly that she was torn but wanted to get back to her roots. “Hosting After Midnight has genuinely been the experience of a lifetime, and I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible journey,” she said. “Though it was an extremely tough decision, I knew I had to return to my first passion and return to stand-up touring full-time. I appreciate CBS, Stephen Colbert, the producers, and the entire After Midnight staff and crew for all the love, support, and unforgettable memories.”

After Midnight had been quietly renewed for a third season but will no longer continue, and EW has learned that CBS will not fill the show’s 12:30 a.m. weekday time slot with original programming. The slot had previously been held by The Late Late Show, hosted at various points by Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, Craig Ferguson, and James Corden.

The discontinuation of After Midnight means that the late-night TV landscape is, once again, exclusively populated by male hosts. CBS’ sole talk show, The Late Show, is in its 11th year with Stephen Colbert; NBC’s The Tonight Show and Late Night are both in year 12, with Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers emceeing; and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live is in its 23rd year with Jimmy Kimmel. Cable talk shows are also exclusively hosted by men, including Andy Cohen on Bravo, Jon Stewart on Comedy Central, and John Oliver and Bill Maher on HBO.

Colbert, who serves as an executive producer on After Midnight, addressed the show’s impending conclusion as well. “I want to thank CBS for their constant support and invaluable partnership on After Midnight, and the whole staff for their amazing dedication,” he said in a statement. “While we were excited and grateful for our third season to start in the fall, we respect Taylor’s decision to return to stand-up full time.”

Tomlinson is currently in the middle of her Save Me Tour, which has dozens of shows lined up between now and January. She released her third Netflix standup special, Have It All, last year.
