We all know ‘The First Frost’ and the 2023 hit C-drama ‘Hidden Love’ exist in the same universe. Just how ‘Hidden Love’ managed to keep audiences hooked, its ongoing spin-off which narrates the love story of Sang Yan, has C-drama fandom amazed. The character was played by Victor Ma in the previous show but now it is led by Bai Jingting in ‘The First Frost.’
There are many who have been wondering why Victor Ma wasn’t cast as Sang Yan in the spin-off series. Well, the Chinese actor answered the question in one of his appearances on what seems to be a variety show. A snippet of his interaction posted in an online video, sees Victor admitting he cannot portray romantic roles well.
“After filming a romantic drama, I realized that I’m really not good at acting in romantic dramas because I’m very slow at reacting. I can act domineering but I’m not suitable to act out sweet scenes. Because I’m incapable of feeling that sense of rhythm. There’s just something to it that I’m unable to grasp and so I’m forever slow to react,” he said.

Victor Ma continued, “When there’s a sweet scene, I realize I’m unable to grasp it… I’m capable of acting as the elder brother like I did in ‘Hidden Love’ but many times I imagined if I were to act as the romantic (ver of Sang Yan), I wouldn’t be able to.”
Now, Bai Jingting plays the male lead Sang Yan while actress Zhang Ruonan essays his romantic interest Wen Yifan. The hit C-drama continues to drop new episodes almost daily on Youku and Netflix.
