Husky’s Past Trauma Left Her Too Scared to Move Around People

Fear is a powerful and universal emotion, one that serves as a survival mechanism for all living beings. It alerts us to danger, keeping us vigilant and cautious when faced with threats. However, when fear becomes overwhelming or unmanageable, it can paralyze both the body and mind, leaving individuals—whether human or animal—unable to respond or escape. For animals like Princess, a once-vibrant husky, fear wasn’t just a fleeting feeling; it was a constant state of being. Her story reveals how trauma can break a spirit but also how patience and love can heal it.

Princess’s journey to recovery began when Rocky Kanaka, a dedicated animal rescuer based in Texas, learned about her dire situation. Princess had been surrendered by her previous owners to a shelter in California, her history marked by mystery and sorrow. Shelter staff reported that her owners cited “hardships” as the reason for relinquishing her, though they offered no further details. Whatever the truth of her past, the trauma Princess experienced was evident. She was utterly terrified of people, so much so that she would freeze in their presence, unable to move or respond.

Kanaka, however, refused to label her as a “lost cause,” as some had suggested. He knew the road to recovery would be long and challenging, but he also knew that with patience, love, and the right approach, healing was possible.

When Kanaka first entered Princess’s kennel, the husky’s response was heartbreaking. She immediately turned away from him, pressing her face into the wall as if trying to disappear. Her body was rigid with fear, and her eyes reflected a deep mistrust of the world around her.

Rather than trying to force a connection, Kanaka opted for a gentle and patient approach. He sat on the floor, keeping a respectful distance, and began speaking softly to her. His goal was simple: to let Princess know she was safe and that he posed no threat. The process was slow and deliberate. Kanaka spent hours in her presence, just talking and creating an atmosphere of calm. While she didn’t respond at first, he hoped that his consistent presence would start to chip away at the walls she had built around herself.

After some time, Kanaka decided to take a small but significant step forward. He brought a treat with him and placed it a short distance away from Princess. He wasn’t expecting her to eat it right away—in fact, he suspected she might not move at all—but he wanted her to smell it and associate it with something positive.

As he predicted, Princess didn’t touch the treat. She remained frozen, her body stiff and unyielding. Kanaka retrieved the treat and left it closer to her before withdrawing to his spot on the floor. Again, he spoke softly, trying to soothe her.

Kanaka’s persistence eventually began to yield results. On one visit, after breaking the treat into smaller pieces and leaving them near her, Princess surprised him by cautiously taking a bite. It was a small victory, but it meant the world to Kanaka. For the first time, Princess had shown a willingness to engage with her surroundings, however tentative it was.

Her eating the treat was more than just a moment of nourishment; it was a step toward trust. Kanaka felt a renewed sense of hope, knowing that this breakthrough was a sign they were moving in the right direction. He continued to speak to her and offer her gentle pets, though her reactions remained subdued.

Curious about Princess’s history, Kanaka spoke with Alexis, a staff member at the shelter. Alexis shared that Princess had been surrendered by her previous owners, who gave vague reasons related to “hardships.” They provided no details about her life before the shelter, leaving her past shrouded in mystery. However, Alexis did share one piece of information: her name. Knowing that the husky had been called Princess gave Kanaka a starting point to build a connection with her.

With trust slowly forming, Kanaka decided to take another step. He carefully placed a leash on Princess, hoping to encourage her to stand and move. However, her fear was still too great, and she refused to budge. Undeterred, Kanaka wrapped himself in a blanket and gently lifted her into his arms. He spoke to her the entire time, offering reassurance as he cradled her. The act was meant not only to comfort her but also to show her that she could feel safe in human hands.

Over time, Kanaka’s consistent efforts began to pay off. Princess started eating treats more readily and allowed Kanaka to pet her without tensing up as much. These small moments of progress were hard-earned but deeply rewarding.

Recognizing that Princess’s recovery would require specialized care, Kanaka enlisted the help of Glenn Massie, an experienced dog trainer. Together, they developed a plan to help Princess overcome her fears step by step. Their goal was to build her confidence and teach her that humans could be a source of love and safety, not fear.

Kanaka, Massie, and the shelter staff are committed to her healing, and their dedication is already making a difference. Each small victory—whether it’s eating a treat, standing up, or relaxing during a petting session—brings her closer to the day when she can find a loving forever home.

Princess’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the transformative power of kindness. Despite the fear and trauma she endured, she is slowly learning to trust again. Her journey serves as a reminder that even the most broken spirits can heal with the right care and compassion. For Princess, the future is full of possibilities, and those who have fought for her believe she will one day experience the life of love and safety she so deeply deserves.
