Air Force Veteran and His Loyal Dog Pass Away Just an Hour and a Half Apart

An Unbreakable Bond Between a Man and His Dog

A dog’s loyalty knows no bounds. They stand by our side through life’s highs and lows, never wavering in their devotion. For Air Force veteran Daniel Hove and his beloved Labrador, Gunner, their connection went beyond companionship—it was a bond that carried them to their final moments together.

Daniel dedicated his life to service. After retiring from the Air Force, he became Burnsville’s Assistant Fire Chief, admired for his leadership and commitment. He was a mentor to many firefighters, always pushing for innovation and excellence in the field.

“He was someone that his department really relied on to innovate, educate, train, and keep up with the new firefighting techniques,” shared his daughter, Heather Nicoletti.

But even after years of selfless service, life had one final battle in store for him.

A Soldier’s Toughest Battle

Daniel’s life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It was a devastating blow, but he fought with the same strength and resilience that defined his career. His family, friends, and community rallied around him, showering him with love and support.

“He was diagnosed in October of 2011. He had Whipple surgery in February of 2012 and then followed that by rounds and rounds and rounds of chemotherapy,” Nicoletti recalled.

Yet, through all the treatments and hardships, there was one constant presence by his side—Gunner, his faithful Labrador.

A Loyal Companion Who Never Left His Side

Gunner wasn’t just a pet; he was Daniel’s shadow, his unwavering source of comfort. The two had always been inseparable, whether out on hunting trips or simply enjoying quiet moments together at home. But as Daniel’s illness progressed, so did Gunner’s devotion.

The aging Labrador rarely left his owner’s side, sensing his pain and matching his every emotion. If Daniel was restless, Gunner was restless. If Daniel struggled, Gunner struggled. They were connected in a way that words could never fully capture.

“They were best buddies till the end. They were hunting buddies, they went everywhere together,” Nicoletti said.

Then, one day, Gunner started to show signs of decline. His movements slowed, his body weakened, and his once vibrant energy began to fade. It was as if he knew his best friend’s time was running out—and he wasn’t going to let him go alone.

A Heartbreaking Goodbye—Together Until the End

It wasn’t a surprise when Gunner fell ill. After all, he was an elderly dog, and Nicoletti had long worried about what would happen when the inevitable came. But as she watched both her father and Gunner fading, she knew deep down that neither could live without the other.

“When my dad would get agitated, the dog would be agitated. My dad was restless, the dog was restless. My dad was unresponsive, the dog was unresponsive. So once we saw how the dog was doing—he wasn’t moving much anymore, not doing well—we knew it was coming.”

When Gunner’s body began to fail him completely, Nicoletti made the heartbreaking decision to ease his suffering. She rushed him to the vet and held his paw as he peacefully passed away. Just an hour and a half later, Daniel followed.

Two Souls Depart Together

Daniel and Gunner had spent their lives side by side, and in death, they remained together. Neither had to face the pain of saying goodbye to the other, a silent blessing in the midst of grief.

“I had said I don’t know what’s going to be more traumatic for him,” Nicoletti admitted. “To try to take him away to end—to put him to sleep—to end his suffering, or if you let him live through dad dying. I think either way it’s going to kill him. We knew they were going to go together. We just didn’t know it was going to be hours apart.”

Though their passing left an immeasurable void, there was solace in knowing that Daniel and Gunner had found peace—together. Their story is a testament to the power of loyalty, love, and the unbreakable bond between a man and his dog.
