Good news! There’s still more Wicked to come.
The hit Broadway musical about the witches of Oz got double the love in its film adaptation, and while Wicked is breaking box office records this holiday season, we’re already dreaming of the next movie. Like the first film, the second is directed by Jon M. Chu with a script by original book writer, Winnie Holzman, and Dana Fox. Marc Platt, who produced the stage show, will return as producer.
The first film, which hit theaters back in November, introduced us to awkward (green) outcast, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and her sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode). When the two girls arrive at Shiz University, Elphaba is forced to room with popular girl, G(a)linda (Ariana Grande). The two begin as mutually loathing roommates only to become best friends who accompany each other to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum).

While Glinda dates party boy, Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), Elphaba tries to suppress her feelings for him after he shows her his unexpected depths. Meanwhile, Nessa strikes up a relationship with munchkin, Boq (Ethan Slater), after he asks her out to impress Glinda.
Elphaba discovers that the Wizard himself is the one behind the oppression of the Animals, including her professor, Doctor Dillamond (Peter Dinklage). When she rebels against him, the Wizard and Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) immediately set to villainizing her, as she finds her power and flies to freedom in “Defying Gravity.”
Part two will pick up after this number, continuing the story, which is, after all, a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Here’s everything we know about the second film.
What is it called?

Fans raised eyebrows when all of the promotion for the first film was simply branded Wicked, without a “Part One” tag to be found. Was it going to be one movie after all? No, it just turns out that the film was only using Wicked Part Two as a working title. Now, the movie has been given an official title, Wicked: For Good.
The new title references the show’s closing duet between Elphaba and Glinda, where they sing to each other about the ways that they have touched the other’s life.
When can I see it?
Wicked: For Good is currently slated to hit theaters on Nov. 21, 2025. This echoes the first film’s release date of Nov. 22, with For Good coming to theaters one day shy of exactly a full year since the opening day of the first movie.

What’s it about?
Universal Pictures
The first film was extremely true to the original stage production, and we expect that For Good will follow a similar pattern. The second act of the musical gets much darker than the chummy school days of act one. Glinda and Elphaba become political foes as Elphaba tries to mount a resistance to the Wizard and his oppressive policies. Glinda, having chosen not to run away with Elphaba, becomes a mouthpiece of the Wizard’s government.
There will also be continued developments in the love triangle between Glinda, Fiyero, and Elphaba. And, we’ll have to confront Elphaba’s end in The Wizard of Oz — death by melting (and don’t forget about the house that falls on top of her sister).
“If Part 1 is about choices, Part 2 is about consequences,” Chu previously told Entertainment Weekly. “Choices are difficult to make, but when you do make those choices, sometimes the result isn’t what you expect it to be. It can be lonely, it can be hard.”
“There’s a lot of soul searching in movie 2,” Chu added. “They’re asking, ‘Is this the right decision that you made?’ There’s a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity].”
While Wicked entirely used songs from Stephen Schwartz’s Broadway score (with a few new additions, including special vocal cameos in “One Short Day”), For Good will offer audiences two new songs from Schwartz. No further details, including which characters will sing the new numbers or where they might fall in the story, are currently available.
Wicked has long been faulted for its second act, which is generally seen as rushed and weaker than its first. With new songs and what we can only assume will be an expanded story, For Good might finally change that.
When can I see a trailer?
Universal Pictures
The first Wicked is still in theaters and garnering strong awards buzz (including talk of a nomination for the Oscar for Best Picture). While there’s so much attention on the awards push for the first film, we’d be surprised if they release much about the second. So far, all we know is the title. A poster has yet to be unveiled, and there’s no projected date for a teaser trailer.
Wicked dropped its first teaser during the 2024 Super Bowl, but it’s unclear whether or not Universal might make the same move again. Both films were shot at the same time, however, so production on For Good has been wrapped for nearly a year. Perhaps that will mean we get a teaser sooner than later?
