A Dog’s Heavy Burden
Henry, a homeless dog, faced unimaginable challenges. He was abandoned at a beach in Newport, California, carrying an enormous 46-pound tumor on his side. Life as a stray is already tough, but for Henry, the physical and emotional toll was almost too much to bear.
A Rescue Mission Like No Other
Rescuers from Newport Beach Animal Control (NBAC) were no strangers to picking up stray dogs in poor condition, but Henry’s case was extraordinary. Valerie Schomburg of NBAC recalls the moment they found him, saying, “Nothing could have prepared us for what Henry looked like.” The tumor on his right front leg was so large it severely affected his ability to walk, making it impossible for him to find food or move comfortably.
A Journey of Resilience
Despite his hardships, Henry’s spirit never wavered. Rescuers quickly got him the medical attention he desperately needed. During his examination, the tumor was discovered to be cancerous, but fortunately, it hadn’t spread to other parts of his body. Henry underwent surgery to remove the tumor, which significantly lightened his physical burden. His weight dropped from 200 pounds to a healthier 78 pounds, and for the first time in years, he could walk normally.

Henry’s recovery was remarkable. His infectious enthusiasm and wagging tail captivated everyone he met. He became a local celebrity as his story spread, touching hearts around the world. Kind strangers sent gifts and treats, showing their support for this brave dog who had endured so much with unwavering positivity.
Finding Love and Justice
Through the efforts of Newport Beach Animal Shelter, Henry found a loving foster family to care for him after his surgery. Though his time on Earth was short, it was filled with love and joy. Henry passed away peacefully in his sleep, leaving behind a legacy of hope and resilience.
After his passing, investigators pursued justice for Henry. His previous owner was located and charged by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, ensuring accountability for the neglect he endured.
