An Unlikely Scene in the Field
A herd of 30 cows stood curiously gathered around what seemed to be a small animal stranded in a muddy puddle. Their concerned glances were almost as if they wanted to help, but they were powerless to do so. Watching this odd scene from afar was Ian Ellis, a bird watcher using his telescope. To his surprise, Ian realized that the “dog” was actually a baby seal!
A Race Against Time
Recognizing the urgency, Ian quickly contacted Skegness Nature Reserve for assistance. The rescue team sprang into action, racing to the location to help the tiny pup. The baby seal was only about five days old, helpless and far from where she belonged. With care, the rescuers pulled the seal from the mud and brought her back to the Seal Hospital.
The Road to Recovery
At the hospital, the baby seal was given antibiotics and a nutritious diet to help her regain strength. The plan is to nurse her back to full health until she reaches a weight of approximately 60-70 pounds. Once she’s strong enough, she will be released back into the wild, where she belongs.

A Mystery Solved by a Caring Observer
How the baby seal ended up in the muddy puddle remains a mystery, but the rescuers believe she became stranded when the tide came in and couldn’t make her way back to the water. Thanks to Ian’s keen observation and the quick response of the rescue team, this young seal was given a second chance at life.
