Ruben Amorim live updates: Manchester United announce new head coach as Erik ten Hag’s replacement

Erik ten Hag has spoken publicly for the first time since he was sacked as manager of Manchester United.

The 54-year-old was dismissed on Monday morning after two and a half years in charge at Old Trafford following United’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham United.

Ten Hag won the League Cup and FA Cup during his reign at United, but departs having overseen the worst Premier League start in the club’s history.

In a message shared on social media by his representatives, Ten Hag thanked United fans for their “special” support.

“Thank you for always being there for the club,” he said. “Whether it was at a game far away or a tough match at Old Trafford, your support has been unshakeable.

“I always enjoyed meeting Manchester United fans throughout the world… you inspired me and radiated a strong sense of unity. That’s what makes United supporters so special.

“We won two trophies — achievements that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Of course, my dream was to bring more trophies to the cabinet. Unfortunately, that dream has come to an end.”

Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim was appointed as Ten Hag’s successor earlier on Friday and will officially take charge of the Old Trafford club from November 11 once he has fulfilled his obligations with Sporting.
