Luke Wilson reprises ‘Legally Blonde’ role for Halloween on ‘Today’

Omigod, you guys: Luke Wilson just reprised his Legally Blonde character as part of a joint Halloween costume with Today host Savannah Guthrie

The actor, who starred as Harvard law student Emmett Richmond in the 2001 film and its 2003 sequel, joined in on the morning show’s spooky festivities by recreating a scene from the film with Guthrie dressed as Reese Witherspoon’s character Elle Woods on Thursday. Wilson wore a suit and tie, while Guthrie sported a bright pink ensemble, pink sunglasses, and even carried a small chihuahua stuffed animal with her.

The pair did their own take on Emmett and Elle’s first meeting, with Guthrie sitting down at a park bench to study next to Wilson, who gave her a few tips on how to pass Stromwell’s difficult class. “You know what I think?” Wilson asked. “I think we ought to have a coffee.”

Guthrie agreed, before noticing that she’d dropped something on the ground and pulling off the perfect bend and snap. “That’s a nice move!” He praised. To which Guthrie replied, “Works every time.”

After their segment, Guthrie thanked Wilson for being “such a good sport” and coming onto the show. “I was happy to be here, although I did get more and more nervous as it got closer to doing it,” he admitted. “As I told you guys, the women that gave me my suit last night said, ‘This is our Super Bowl.’ So in between that and the World Series game, I had a little hard time getting to sleep.”

And, of course, Wilson addressed the possibility of a third Legally Blonde film, which has been in the works since 2018. “Well, I hope there is. It would be really fun to do,” he said. “You just never know. But I bet at some point down the line — while Reese and I can still do it — and this has to be very inspiring to Reese.”

Funnily enough, Legally Blonde wasn’t the only one of Wilson’s films that got a shoutout on Thursday after Willie Geist came dressed as Will Ferrell’s Anchorman character, Ron Burgundy.

“By the way, Luke Wilson could’ve also been in my sketch too,” Geist said later on the broadcast. “He also was in Anchorman! In the famous fight scene with the anchors.”

Wilson played a small role in the film as Frank Vitchard, a Channel 2 News anchor who gets his arm sliced off during the hilariously gruesome news battle. He was ready for round two on Today, jokingly telling Geist, “We can bust it off.”

They weren’t the only ones dressed for the occasion, either. Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer came dressed as Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz; Craig Melvin as Axel Foley from Beverly Hills Cop; Carson Daly and Sheinelle Jones as Austin Powers and Foxxy Cleopatra; and Peter Alexander and Laura Jarrett as Mrs. Doubtfire and Bring it On’s Isis, respectively.

Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager also transformed into Jack and Rose from Titanic, and even recreated the pair’s “King of the World” scene at the front of the boat on the show.

Hager later revealed that their costumes were a nod to Kotb’s decision to leave the show sometime next year. “Now he has to fall into the ocean and disappear,” she teased, referring to Kotb’s Jack. “Do you get the metaphor?”

Al Roker also took a moment to give his take on the James Cameron film, noting that he firmly believed that there was “enough room on the door” for Jack and Rose to have both survived.
