Indigestion, motion sickness, morning sickness… all of us experience nausea at some point. I still remember one particularly bad case. food poisoning fYears ago! Home remedies for nausea are a great way to help.
What Causes Nausea?
Like anything in life, there’s no silver bullet when it comes to solving feelings of nausea. Step one is figuring out what’s causing the problem. The right natural remedy will be easier to find. Even if you don’t know the source of your upset stomach though these natural remedies are still helpful.
Motion Sickness
Whether it’s in a car, on a boat, or on a plane, motion sickness can cause you to experience nausea. If you’re traveling in a car getting out for some fresh air can help, but that’s not really something you can (safely!) On an airplane, you can’t do this!
When the inner ears, brain and eyes do not communicate well with each other, it can cause motion sickness. Our inner ear regulates balance and the Vestibular System. When our body is moving but our eyes don’t perceive the movement the disconnect causes symptoms of nausea.
Cancer Drugs
Cancer patients going to chemotherapy Through chemotherapyRadiation, chemotherapy, and other conventional cancer treatments are known to cause nausea. Chemo, which is often used to treat cancers like breast tumors, can be very hard on your body. It can cause vomiting to be controlled by certain brain areas. According to experts, chemo drugs can also cause irritation of the stomach and digestive system.
It’s a common problem and around 80% of chemo patients have chemotherapy-induced nausea.
Pregnancy Nausea
The cute little buns in the oven can cause nausea. In the first trimester, pregnant women can experience morning sickness. It usually subsides after the early stages of pregnancy but some women may experience nausea and vomiting into their second or third trimesters.
Food Poisoning
I enjoyed a wonderful dinner in a restaurant a few years back. Everything was fine until 3 am, when I began to feel nauseated and vomited. I’ll spare you the details, but suffice it to say food poisoning is no fun. Food poisoning is caused by harmful bacteria, viruses, microbes and chemicals. The symptoms can include diarrhea and nausea.
You may also experience nausea or other health problems.
- Heartburn (indigestion) and acid reflux
- Overeating
- Bloating and constipation
- Migraine
- The stomach is affected by gastric or peptic Ulcers.
- Menstrual pain
- Heatstroke and heat exhaustion
- Heart attack
- Certain drugs and treatments
Conventional Treatments of Nausea
Your local drugstore has a wide variety of anti-nausea medication that you can buy over the counter. These anti-emetic medications can be effective, but they often have unwanted side effects. The side effects of anti-nausea medications include confusion, dizziness and difficulty breathing.
The drugs may relieve nausea, but can cause other issues instead! I always use natural and complementary nausea remedies.
Home remedies for nausea
Once you know what’s causing your upset stomach it’s easier to know which remedy to choose. Here are some of the best nausea remedies I’ve found and how to apply them.
1. Acupuncture & Acupressure
These two therapies have some similarities, but also some differences. Both work by activating energy meridian in the body. Acupuncture is performed by an acupuncturist who uses thin needles. Acupressure, on the other hand, applies firm pressure in specific areas of the body.
You can Acupressure is easy to use You can use acupressure points at home to relieve nausea. The hand is one of the most common acupressure points for nausea. The webbing that connects your thumb and index fingers with the thumb of the other hand can be pinched by pinching it. Repeat the pressure for 3-4 minute.

Try this wristband Sea-Bands. It’s a bracelet that activates an anti-nausea pressure point on your wrist. They’re safe for kids and pregnant mamas.
2. Essential Oils For Nausea
Essential oils Our family uses essential oils every day. Aromatherapy is a great reason to diffuse essential oils. It can also reduce nausea. There are many essential oils that can help with nausea. Peppermint is one. Lemon essential oil can also be helpful, particularly for nausea during pregnancy.
These oils have antimicrobial components that fight harmful pathogens by inhaling them. Peppermint oil has a refreshing scent that can also calm nausea. You can diffuse ginger essential oils or dilute them and apply to your stomach. Bergamot is also a good choice to inhale if you are experiencing nausea.
In a 2021 research, cancer patients who were also taking meds applied peppermint essential oil beneath their noses as a nausea reliever. The control group used only anti-nausea medications. The group that used peppermint had less nausea and vomiting compared to the group using only drugs.
In 2020, a study examined the effects of peppermint on nausea following heart surgery. Inhaling peppermint helped reduce nausea and vomiting as well.
I love What are my diffusers? You can also inhale the scent directly from the bottle by taking a few deep breaths. This way, if the scent becomes overwhelming it hasn’t already permeated the room via diffuser.
To use:Use peppermint or lemon to diffuse or inhale. Essential OilIf needed
3. Peppermint Tea
Like oil,Peppermint TeaHelps ease nausea. It’s safe to drink, even for kids, so it’s a gentle nausea remedy. It’s often used for other digestive complaints too, like bloating and irritable bowel syndrome. If you have GERD or acid reflux though it’s best to be wary of consuming lots of mint. It can relax the lower-esophageal muscle and worsen symptoms.
Use: Pour 1 cup of boiling water, add 1-2 tea spoons of mint and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the tea and drink in small amounts as required.
4. Ginger
Ginger is also a common home remedy used to relieve nausea and digestive upset. For a convenient option, you can purchase crystallized chews of ginger. Ginger tea or ginger aleWill also work. A review from 2015 examined ginger’s effectiveness for nausea of all kinds, including nausea caused by pregnancy. The authors concluded that ginger is effective in reducing nausea from various sources.
ACOG recommends it to pregnant women as a safe alternative to nausea medications. It is also more effective than dimenhydrinate, an antiemetic. It may even help lower blood sugar.
To use:One gram of ginger per day was shown to have positive results in studies. For tea, it’s generally recommended to use up to 3-5 grams of fresh ginger or 2 teaspoons of dried ginger in tea daily while symptoms are present.
Ginger can interfere with diabetes medications, blood thinners and high blood tension medication. If you’re on medication discuss using ginger in medicinal amounts with your healthcare provider.
6. A Breath Of Fresh Air
It is worth taking a chance on a new experience. Fresh air is a welcome change. We feel nauseated when our body temperature drops. Blood vessels dilate, allowing heat to escape from the surface. This causes us to feel hot, flushed, or even nauseous. We will instinctively seek out cooler air.
Scientists speculate using cold air or ice packs counteracts our body’s effort to raise body temperature and reduce queasiness.
To use:Take some deep, slow breaths. If you’re in the car open a window. Go outside to breathe and relax.
7. You Might Want to Move It
Exercise can be helpful if your stomach pain is due to poor digestion or excessive eating. Exercise, such as a gentle walk or workout, increases blood circulation in our muscles and other organs. This includes those responsible for digestion. This boost in circulation can improve digestion, which can reduce nausea.
This isn’t the solution for all acute nausea situations though, so use your best judgment here.
To use: Take a gentle walk or make other movements. However, avoid bending your back!
8. Cinnamon at That Time of Month
Unbalanced HormonesCan cause heavy or uncomfortable periods. While it’s best to address the root of the problem, in the meantime it helps to have symptom relief. Menstrual cramps that are moderate to severe can cause nausea and vomiting.
Researchers studied the use of cinnamon to treat menstrual disorders in 2015. In the group that took cinnamon supplements, there was less bleeding, pains, nausea and vomiting. The cinnamon supplement did not have any side effects.
Use:Sip on Cinnamon teaTake cinnamon supplements. The women in the above study took three 420 mg cinnamon pills per day. Cinnamon lowers blood sugar so it isn’t for those with low blood sugar and may interfere with diabetes medications.
9. Pregnancy Nausea Remedies
After 6 pregnancies I’ve learned a thing or two about pregnancy nausea. Some doctors believe it’s a positive sign that our bodies produce enough pregnancy hormones for a healthy pregnancy. Others believe that it could be due nutrient deficiencies. The following remedies may be helpful.
- Avoid scents that make you nauseated.
- Reduce the size of your meals and eat more frequently.
- Don’t drink water with meals but in between. Water dilutes digestive juices.
- Avoid complex foods and choose simple, nutrient rich food.
- You can use a fan to cool down or you can go outside and get some fresh oxygen.
- Inhale essential oils of lemon or peppermint.
- Sip On ginger ale,Mint tea or lemon water.
- Try a vitamin B6 supplement (they’re shown to help pregnancy nausea)
What to Eat When Nausea is Coming On
If you’re nauseous, food may be the last thing you want to think about. If you have food poisoning, then it’s helpful to let the body clear itself out first then worry about eating. In the case of pregnancy nausea though, you don’t want to avoid eating for too long. You’re eating for two after all!
When you’re ready to venture into food again it’s best to start slow. Applesauce, rice, and bananas are all bland foods. Some mothers find it helps to eat little meals and snacks during the day.
It’s also really important to drink electrolytes to prevent dehydration. Years ago, I was hospitalized on vacation for not drinking enough water after spending a day in the hot sun. I’m especially careful now to stay hydrated with healthy or homemade sports drinks. These are great for on-the-go. LMNT electrolyte drink mixes.
When to Seek Medical Treatment
You are the best person to know your own body. You should trust your instincts and consult a health professional if something seems off.
- If you’ve been in the sun all day without enough water and electrolytes, then heat exhaustion or heat stroke are a risk.
- A heart attack can also be accompanied with nausea. Heart attacks are characterized by nausea, feeling lightheaded and cold sweat.
- Hyperemesis Gravidarum, or HG, is a condition in which pregnant mothers experience severe nausea, vomiting and weight loss.
If your nausea is part of a more serious health issue, it’s important to seek medical advice right away.
