Hormones are involved in all aspects of health, and lately I’ve seen the affect of hormones on hair and scalp health.
After eight years of pregnancy and nursing, my body was tired and after that many years of my hormones being elevated from pregnancy/nursing, the postpartum hair loss finally occurred… and did it ever.
This happens because most hair follicles grow hair for a few months and then rest for a few months with an average of 10% of the head’s follicles resting at once. The resting period is reduced during pregnancy. Women lose less hair in pregnancy. However, postpartum hormones may cause the body’s rest period to be surpassed, resulting in more hair loss than normal. This is a natural process. However, after five pregnancies, and without having experienced postpartum loss of hair, it finally caught me up.
Stress can also make hair loss worse. The hair loss stopped after I treated the stress and hormones, but I still wanted to make my new hair grow faster and protect my hair/scalp during the summer.
