Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool cannot ‘do what they want’ like Man City and Newcastle as manager claims Reds must find other ways to compete with Premier League’s limitless spenders

Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s manager insists that Liverpool cannot compete against Manchester City in the transfer marketplace and must find alternative ways.

Champions City is now just one point behind league leaders Arsenal. Their major summer signing Erling Haland, who has scored 15 goals in nine games, is Champions City.

While the Reds are able to spend big, their ownership model under Fenway Sports Group means they must try harder to balance the books, with Klopp’s net spend around £150m in seven years.

City, on the other hand, have a bottomless pit of cash provided by Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour, and their net spend over six years under Guardiola is around half-a-billion pounds.

When asked how Liverpool could keep pace, Klopp said: “Oh, you won’t like the answer. City is the only one that can do it.

“You have the best team in the world and you put in the best striker on the market (Erling Haaland), no matter what it costs, you just do it.

“What does Liverpool do? We can’t act like them. It’s impossible.

“There are three clubs in world football who can do what they want financially. It’s legal and everything, fine, but they can do what they want.

“We have to look at it (and say) ‘We need that and we need that and we have to look here and make it younger, and here a prospect and here a talent’.

“That is what you have to do. You have to compete with them. You must compete with them.

“It is not a problem at all for me, it’s like it is.”

Klopp also pointed towards Saudi-backed Newcastle as an example of a club who can operate however they like – unlike Liverpool.

He added: “I heard now that at Newcastle somebody (sporting director Dan Ashworth) said, ‘There is no ceiling for this club’.

“Yes, he is absolutely right. Newcastle has no ceiling. Congratulations. But some other clubs have ceilings.”
