UN General Assembly Lauds Ukraine and Shuns Russia after Missile Strikes

Within hours of the initial announcement, the United Nations General Assembly met for an emergency session. Russia launched a deadly missile barrage across UkraineDuring the ongoing war, there was a heated proxy battle between the delegates of the two countries.

As the body prepares to vote later in the week, Monday’s meeting will be held. Russia’s recent annexe of Ukraine’s partially-occupied territories, which includes the Kherson, Luhansksks, Donetsksk and Zaporizhzhia areas.

The initial gathering gave clear indications of how the assembly would vote according to CNNThe Associated Press reported that the Ukraine’s UN Ambassador was greeted by applause while Russia’s Ambassador was treated to silence. 

On Monday, The General Assembly handily vetoed Russia’s attempt to conduct the annexation vote via secret ballot, according to the outlet. One-hundred-and-seven countries voted in favor of holding a public vote on the matter, while thirteen nations opted for a secret ballot, according to Reuters. The outlet reported that 39 countries abstained while the rest, including Russia, didn’t vote.

Ukraine’s delegate, Sergiy Kyslytsya delivered emotional opening statements opposing Russia’s strikes, according to The New York Times.

He said that a trail of blood was left behind by the Russian delegation as it entered the General Assembly. “And the hall is filled with the smells of smoldering human flesh.”

According to CNN Kyslytsya claimed that Russia had already killed his family members and that he believed there was no stopping that cruelty.

Vasily Nebenzya (Russia’s UN ambassador), suggested that other countries were conspiring against Moscow, according to the outlet. He continued to defend Russia’s annexations.
